Knob Creek Observations

Recommended Posts

Saw quite a few Thompsons, but not as many as previous years...There was a really NICE 28 Navy in a repro FBI case towards the back of the B section facing the B/C aisle, $32K...L&L had a 21AC in 50% condition, $29.9K...John Thedford had a .22 WH for $9.8K, would someone please buy that from him, he's had it a while. He also had several nice M1/A1's for $17K...The best gun I saw by far was a Commercial 28 Savage in a tent next to Century's set up. Blued barrel, checkered actuator and levers, excellent condition. 21xxx serial #. He said he was sellings guns from a friends estate, $22k. He said several had told him the price was too low, he also observed it hadn't sold yet at that price...A great time as usual, already looking forward to the fall show.

Knob Creek is always fun went with a friend Friday. Saw the Thompsons mentioned above . Didn't find many Thompson parts seems as if a lot of people want black gun stuff. We old folks must be out of step. Did see a young fellow and his girl friend looking at a Thompson drum made me feel good. Friend did get a good buy on a AO parts kit. Hope to go back in the fall I love going to Knob Creek.

renovate7,

Yes, TD and I looked at the Savage Thompson you mentioned. It was serial number S-21286. I think it was the nicest Thompson at the show. There was some question of a possible re-blue, but I'm not certain of it. I thought in the current market that $22K was a bit high, but it would have sold a few years ago for that price with no problem whatsoever.

There was also a Colt for $21K with a lot of accessories, but the receiver on it was about the only original part. The lower frame was most likely Savage, and had the original serial number milled off, and the serial number of the Colt receiver marked over it The milling and remarking reminded me of the manner in which Model of 1927's were remarked.

Did anyone else see the Colt 21, #1613, I think, under glass, just a bit further in than the $21K Colt, on the same south side ?

The gentleman said it was musuem quality, $35K, I did not handle it, I think there was a Savage 28 in the same display case.

I did see NO 1613. It was by far the best Colt I saw at the show. No price was available when I saw it early Friday morning. There was also a C drum in the case. The Savage was an early Savage, S-34025. It was being marketed as a Savage Commercial. I would want to see some police department provenance before I would say it was a Savage Commercial. It had patent numbers on the right side of the receiver, not patent dates.

The other early Savage, S-21286, looked nice but careful inspection showed the receiver markings, especially the patent dates on the right side to be rather light. This may mean nothing, especially in the Knob Creek sun. But if I was an interested purchaser, I would want to look at the finish closely. This one may have been a Savage Commercial, but again, I would want to see some police department provenance.

The levers on both early Savage Thompson's were not checkered or of Colt manufacture. The levers were knurled, indicative of an early Savage Thompson. The magazine release catch on both early Savage Thompson's did not have the usual hole found on most Savage and Auto-Ordnance Bridgeport guns. Examination of the checkering on the magazine release catch (yes, checkering on this part) was indicative of early Savage manufacture. There is a lot of confusion about Colt parts on early Savage Thompsons.

T. D., it was nice to meet you in person at the Creek. I talked with the seller of of colt thompson No 1613 several more times and was finally able to get asking prices from him. He was asking 35K for the gun, 7.5k for the C drum and 1.75k for the L drum. I told him that even considering the very fine conditon of the gun and the drums, those were very aggressive prices and it might take quite awhile to sell at those prices in the current market. I will follow up with him in the next week or so to see if he has reevaluated his pricing. If anyone wants the seller's contact info, pm me and I will pass it along.

DLansky,

It was great to meet you at Knob Creek. I agree with your assessment of NO 1613. While it certainly looked like a very nice Thompson, today is a buyers market. I think the price will come down if the seller is genuinely interested in selling it. The price on the C drum is surprising. I doubt any C drums have sold for $7500 in the last year or so. I bet if he listed it for 5K it would not sell very fast. I did not look at the L drum.

Yes that Bridgeport I got from Knob Creek was in almost perfect condition ( thanks to chopper28 he spotted it for me ) What was realy odd , none of the ammo dealers had any 45 ammo ,there was one who had a small stack of box's for 40. 00 a 100 rd. but that was gone right away . This was the first time that I went there that the dealers didn't have any ! ! Was a great weekend at the creek.
