TM1 came home from Kahr today - NOT VERY HAPPY!

Recommended Posts

This is the email that I just sent to Kahr:

Hello,

My TM1 Thompson was returned to me today and I am not very happy!

  1. The shipping carton was way, way too large and the gun was poorly wrapped in bubble wrap and just bounced around inside the carton as did the magazine which wasn’t wrapped in anything!
  2. There was no paperwork explaining what, if anything, was done to my gun.
  3. The bolt handle is crushed on one side (see attached photos).
  4. The bolt appears to have been replaced. Other than that I have no idea what was done to this gun

Please send me a new bolt handle right away and an explanation or work order as to what was done.

Signed an angry customer,

-David B. Foster

P.S. Upon further inspection a see that the right ear of the rear sight is bent inwards too!

Pretty shoddy work and packaging guys!

Kahr's customer service is some of the worst I have ever seen in the business and I have been doing this for well over 38 years. I will not stock their firearms and I will not special order one for a customer.

This is disconcerting. It pretty much tells me I'm on my own if something ever breaks on my T1B-14. From the posts I've read on here, it would seem a gentleman by the name of "deerslayer" would be the one to go to...

I ordered a new bolt from them a few months ago I still haven't received it as of yet but im sure it will show up , when I called to check on the order status I was on hold for less then a minute and the young lady that waited on me was extremely polite and helpful. I have purchased other parts from them without any problems and fairly quick delivery. ive also purchased a new tm1 that ran like a champ right out of the box. the bent handle on your gun is not cool, but im willing to bet it was done in shipping. it really doesn't matter what we buy anymore ,cars,tv, etc theres always that chance of getting something that malfunctions... I purchased a new corvette a couple years ago it was my retirement present for myself. in the first month I owned it, it was in the shop for 22 days. the dealer took it back from me and replaced it with another that has had zero problems. im wanting to buy one of AOs m1 carbines in the next couple months.. ive read some great reviews on them. hang in there and give us a range report to see if they fixed the original problem. im sure we would all like to know

Many years ago (15?) I sent my '27A1 back to them for warranty work, the barrel shot loose after the first 300 rounds. Well, it's under warranty they should fix it. Came back UPS Ground wrapped in a stretch plastic netting material, loose in a box. The netting rubbed the black oxide finish off to the white steel in the same net pattern. I sent it directly to PK, he fixed all my issues and more.

The point of this is, we could fill volumes of pages with stories of Kahr customer service issues. For the new people contemplating a purchase or repair work, skip Kahr's repair department. Even if warranty work should be covered, PK or Dan Block will fix it right then you can have many happy years without that bad Kahr taste in your mouth.

They do a crappy job of fixing their handguns too.

Before I had my policy of no Kahr's I sent a 1911 back to them for repair, the front sight came off after the third round fired. Weeks went by, finally called to check on that status, they could not find the pistol. I sent them copies of the shipping records showing it was delivered and signed for. More weeks went by, they still could not find it, so finally I said about time I notify ATF you have lost that pistol since it is logged out to you on the A&D, surprisingly they found it the next day. Just a poor product matched with poor service.

well what do expect, from kahr, dont people learn anything from this website, friend dont let friends buy kahr, just seyn

Which Thompson should a new buyer be looking at? I've heard the WH guns are turds and require a bunch of work and polishing to get running right. So if Kahr are also turds, what should they be looking at? Not everybody has $20k to buy an heirloom.

I rarely ever take "internet advice" anyway. As far as I'm concerned, anything pulled from the fountain of misinformation is hearsay at best. Especially when the person "seyn" it can't even type / write in proper English. That throws a lot of credibility right out the window.

All that said - I haven't shot my new Kahr yet, I hope it works well...

No, they don't but it doesn't justify throwing good money away on a piece of junk. I bought my first machine gun on a 2Lt's pay which in 1980 wasn't all that much, but a loan from the credit union made it happen. Years later when I sold that MG42 I more than made up for any interest I paid on that loan.

One man's trash ... I would not say that they are pieces of junk ... Do they require some work post purchase? Usually. That said, with some patience, money, and the hands and mind of a skilled smith the weapons can be made to run dependably. I bought mine to fill the gap in my WWII collection ... Would I rather have an original Thompson? Sure ... Who wouldn't? At my age the 20K + price tag just doesn't make much sense for me. I had a chance in 1986 to buy a 1928A1 for $3600 from an Indiana class 3 dealer ... I could have put it on a credit card, but I passed ... I suppose there are some that would think I threw away my money buying my semi auto OOW 1918 BAR ... But I am happy with it. ... Hindsight as they say.

I just sent a 2nd email to Kahr:

Please send me a new bolt handle and a new rear sight assembly right away and I will fix it myself!

UPS dropped a boat anchor on my barreled receiver and ruined the front sight. Went with it right down to the UPS main warehouse and ran through a group of supervisors to the final hammer, she said they would pay for the replacement cost of the sight alone, not labor for repair, and not shipping for another carrier since they couldn't be trusted, never mind.

As to the question of which one to buy, Kahr is the only game in town if you want new. It may run, may not. Be prepared to pay to get it right and then be happy with it. Find an old Westy that hasn't been by PK or Dan yet, you will most likely need to have it off to them at some point.

You did not send it in a hard case?

I had a $500 stock ruined by FED Ex and the outside of the box was untouched. They replaced it, really nice about it.

Had a parts kit delivered by Fed Ex, from Apex. the guy set the box down and rang the bell saw him sprinting to the truck, he usually waits and chats for a while. The box was destroyed and wrapped in tape.

AOC will make it right, I have had great service from them. That should never happen.
