Riding 'shotgun' with TSMG

Recommended Posts

Link to a short Pathe film that I came across, showing a British soldier riding 'shotgun' with a TSMG, on a REME tank recovery vehicle, somewhere in the Western desert in 1942.

Maybe like a lot of Pathe movie clips of the time, it was only shot, no pun intended, for propaganda purposes.

Pretty sure this was all staged, as for either possible training indoctrination as to what to expect recruits would be actually doing in the field or it was made possibly for the folks at home as to "what a marvelous job our boys are doing out there on the front". The explosions just happened to be lined up with the trucks and cameras, and if there were REAL shells landing that closely NOBODY would be standing there and filming on a tripod with no camera movement. Pretty interesting all the same. Thanks for showing.

The Australian cameraman Sgt Len Chetwyn's unit were notorious among the other AFPU camera units for doing this sort of thing. Many of the most 'dramatic' still and movie shots of the desert war come from him.

The Crusader is from 3 Royal Tank Regt in 4 Armoured Bde.
