What I Got For Christmas...

Recommended Posts

My lovely wife, Teresa, presented me with a reprint of the February 10, 1926, Chicago Daily Tribune front page. Some of you may recall, according to Helmer's The Gun That Made The Twenties Roar, this was purportedly the first major mention of the "Tommy Gun" in the press (OSTTE).

http://www.darklightimagery.net/thompson/tribune02101926.jpg

The subline is "Rake Saloon in Beer War; One May Die" and "Hangout Riddled by Steel Bullets". The text begins, "Thirty-seven bullets from a light automatic machine gun were poured into the saloon of Barton (Buff) Costello...last night by gangsters striving to assassinate two rivals for the highly profitable south side traffic in good beer."

Boy, I could just kill for a beer....

It continues, "Capt. Stege said there was no doubt the bullets came from a machine gun of a type which has been advertised in trade magazines. Thirty-seven shells, all alike, were found on the stairs of the saloon".

Sounds like the start of a problem there, Cap'n...

What a great gift! Framing to follow.....

What did the rest of you get?

PS: Also got a "Weird Al" DVD!

Awesome Chris, that will make a nice touch for your collection.

My wife picked up a shirt from MobWare. Also 2 MachineGunBooks.com travel mugs. One to use, the other as part of the collection.

I won't know about any other Tommy related items until tomorrow. My list was mostly Thompson related.

I was bidding on an original newspaper with the headlines on the St. Valentines Day Massacre. I think the closing bid was around 70. I wasn't prepared to go much higher.

My gift to myself....hehehe....is Medal of Honor, Rising Sun. Great Thompson action in this one. It's a 1928 model w/ 20 round mags. More realistic than the others. Just spent 41/2 hrs playing this to the point my contacts are drying out. I'm also working on getting a original wanted poster for Dillinger. Next will be the newspaper articles.

Merry Christmas everyone. For those of you who are travelling, be safe.

Cool gift, Chris, be sure to have it framed with acid free archival grade backing.

My wife gave me a very large tool box to store all of my ammo, gun cleaning supplies, extra magazines and Thompson parts.

Ralph, you stole my thunder. I got one, too. Greg Fox does excellant work. I had given up on getting one because my wife thought it was too expensive; she wanted me to get the cheaper Kahr case for several hundred less. I said nevermind, I'll do without. Last night, a neighbor brought over a box after everyone had gone to bed but me. I knew what it was without looking. Now I need 3 more XX boxes and a cleaning rod. Merry Christmas!

I got the soundtracks to "Dude, Where's My Car" and "Mystery Men", Kelly's Heroes DVD (gratuitous Thompson fu action and on Steve's Top 10 Greatest Movies of All Time list), a refrigerator for my office, and a set of digital calipers for machining projects (and some beer). Not a bad haul for an old guy like me.
