Replaced Mag Release Spring- Now Won't Fire w/ Mag in Gun

Recommended Posts

i was having issues with some mags not clicking in my gun, so i decided to take my lower apart and swap out the mag release spring--now im having an issue!

the gun fires w/o a mag in the gun

put a mag in the gun and the trigger just goes click, remove the mag and the trigger works normally....what did i do?

of course i had a competition to go to tonight, so im trying to fix the problem quickly.

thanks for any help in advance

w/o a mag the trigger dryfires perfectly

put a mag in (empty) and it just goes CLICK....i have the lower off with a mag in it and can see the little tab on the mag is hitting the part on the lower and raising it up...put 1 bullet in the mag and it doesnt...im not at a range....so i cant just fire it

i might go in the back yard and dryfire it with a loaded mag and hold back the actuator so it doesnt slam...fun stuff

ive looked at the pics of my lower i took a while back...all the parts appear to be correct

it still goes CLICK...though....i can fire it with the lower by itself and a empty mag and i can see the rocker move and go click

glad its alright....its not overly complex to take apart and put back together and ive done it 2x now while watching the video....so i was sure i had it right....

If I understand what you are saying the gun is working perfectly. With a mag in the gun

the front of the trip is pushed up and pivots the disconnector out of engagement with the

sear. So you can't pull the trigger and release the bolt.

With no mag the trip stays down and you can snap the gun.

The original idea - which is almost unique to the Thompson - is that you know the

mag is empty when the bot stays back.

yes...and i thought i remembered the thompson's bolt staying back on the last round...but since ive only had limited experience with it i wasnt 100% sure...now that i took the lower off and have an understanding of that trip and what it does...

ive got thousands of rounds out of my Uzi and Mac...only a few hundred out of the Thompson...still learning

have to say the smoothness of the action and trigger of a thompson is so far above a Uzi and Mac...

too bad its so damn heavy and awkward to feed mags quickly

Hi Huggy,

Practice. When you get familiar with the Thompson, the mags go right in and out. I had the same problem. 3 years later, I don't notice mag changes in competition. Slow and smooth. I'm working on quick :)

Good luck,

i had my wife practice a bit as she was going to join in on the match....but after watching her try 11x's and not getting it into the slot i feared for my guns finish.....i now realize getting her pregnant was more about my skill than hers
