9mm Magazine Adapter - M3

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

Could someone post some photos of a GG 9mm magwell adapter? The reproductions don't appear to be very accurate. (U shaped strip of sheet metal.) I've a friend with an M3. We have gathered up all the parts except the magwell adapter. With these plastic printers it should be pretty easy to model up the adapter if I knew what it looked like. I could guess but the picture is worth a 1000 guesses :)

BTW, the 9mm GG must run at really low RPM. Looking forward to some trigger time.

Thanks,

Attached are some photos of an original 9mm M3 adapter.

I sold the complete kit years ago, it never ran right. It seemed as though the barrel was not extended rearward enough, the rounds in the mag were too far away to feed properly,

I did find a fix, by moving the barrel back and using 2-front guide plates to keep the bolt from hitting the barrel. I did a SAR or Shotgun News article about it. I looked on SAR's website, but could not find the article.

BTW

There are conversion kits for .45 MAC 10s that use grease gun mags, the conversion kits have an adapter to use 9mm Sten mags.

I often wonder if they would work for a GG conversion. (?)

Hi Frank,

Thank you! That is just what I need. The virus may slow down testing but I'll let you (and everyone else) know how it goes. The bolt assembly is a recent reproduction that needed some fitting to go together. Same with the barrel assembly. I will not feel bad if I have to set-back the barrel to make it run better.

Thanks again,

Mine runs like a champ in 9mm!

Maybe a couple reasons why. I used the Guide 9mm bolt and mag insert, but I had to start with an aftermarket barrel assembly and the bolt to barrel distance was way off as received. So I had to set it by comparing the bolt to barrel distance in .45 configuration and then I applied it to the 9mm bolt/barrel. I've done a previous thread about that.

The other contributing factor was the Sten magazine. I only own 2 or 3 of these and had no luck with any of them. I switched to the Tapco MPA 9mm magazines and have had NO trouble since. I bought 20-25 of these and they all work great!

It's a real joy to shoot in 9mm IMO. I now have about twice as much 9mm ammo on hand as I do .45.

Hi John,

Thank you for saving me quite a bit of trial-and-error. I'm using the Indy bolt. With that in mind, it looks like the barrel really needs to go more to the rear so that the cartridge doesn't have to jump far to the barrel.

I"m going to learn soon what stops the bolt from going forward on the 9mm conversion when the barrel is set-back :)

I shoot the Sten quite a bit. Funny that I've not had trouble with magazines except for the weird ones that look like tent stakes or were modified for single stack. Those all went to the scrap bin. I do like the idea of the MPA magazines but they appear to be out-of-production. I'll keep using my google skills.

Thanks again to everyone. You have saved me many headaches.

Sincerely,

Grasshopper

I did the complete Indy setup and got that to run well. Tweaked the ejector, and reshaped the adapter and cleaned it up to fit the mags mcuh better. Never messed with the barrel at all. Lots of good info in the thread from a couple years back.

I don't know if I got lucky with the two mags I picked or it all works that well regardless? I used several mags to fit the adapter so that I could be assured most all worked, but I only actually fired from one or two. If I shot the gun regularly 9mm is all I would shoot. HTH

John in IN,

When you set your Grease-Gun up to use those TAPCO MPA 9mm Magazines...…….are they single-position-feed magazines like the Sten (and 45ACP Grease-Gun mags)……..or are they two-position-feed (?). Maybe a clear photo of the top of a loaded magazine for us to reference.....and possible help sort out some owners with issues setting their Grease-Gun up in 9mm (?).

If you have an original 9mm Grease-Gun Magazine-Well sheet-metal adaptor...…..could you put a few measurements to this hard to find item...…..maybe height, width, depth...…...and maybe the thickness of the sheet-metal ._ _ _"

Sooner or later (even though only a few would be bought)…..someone will take the time to produce a good replica of this.

Here's a few dimensions. Note that it's made of spring steel, so you squeeze it a little to start it into the mag well. Then the springiness (sp?) expands it into place and the dimple on the back locks it into place on the mag release.

Here's a view with the adapter inserted into the gun. You can see how it's locked into place by the mag release. So to remove the adapter I just take the mag release out, squeeze the adapter a little at the bottom and pull it out. I use a little plastic chisel to help pry it down slightly until I can get a hold of it.

As far as the magazines go, I think they are the usual GG double stack, single feed design. I also have a Tapco loader which works great, but the regular .45 loader works well too on these 9mm mags.

I'm not sure where all of these mags went?? They used to be all over GB but seem to have dried up for some reason. I'm sure it wasn't because of GG 9mm conversions!

John in IN,

Thank you very much for those photos......they really do help.

On the TAPCO Magazine.....to me, it appears to be a single-center-feed type magazine as are the original Grease-Gun magazines....and those for a standard Sten-Gun.

Last, could you post a clear photo of the magazine-well-adaptor inserted from the bottom of the magazine-well for us (?)…...TIA.
