I'm interested to know if anyone has tried a 22lr conversion kits on an AR15. I have a Colt made outfit, not sure of the age but still in the plastic. I didn't want to open it if there were better made kits today to use.

I have a CMMG conversion unit and it works well if kept clean. It is over six years old and I think they are even better now.

But if you want lots of the latest info, I agree the AR15 forum is the place to go. Lots of good folks over there too.

I too have a CMMG kit. It can be used with your MG upper but I made a dedicated 22LR verssion using a CMMG barrel. I shoot a lot of 22 on FA and prefer not to lead up my MG 1 in 7 twist stuff. The 22LR barrel has 1 in 16 twist. It's a lot of fun using Black Dog 50 rnd drums or the 25 rnd stick mags. My kits are stainless steel and are slower to dirty/easier to clean. Their stuff is not cheap though.

Thanks Bug, Ploughboy, JJX, and Speed. I think what I'm after, those guys may can help. Since I got the old Colt one unused, I figured I would just sell that one and buy a better one. I just didn't know if I already had the best one or not. But thanks a lot. Have a good one.

Sorry to get in on this thread late but I have several .22 kits that are used in uppers that vary from 5 1/2" to 20". I have a couple Ciener kits but most are the newer Stainless CMMG kits. I've been fortunate as all my kits, except one , runs perfect on full auto. The Black Dog mags /drums are the only way to go. I knew things were getting much better once CMMG began making the trips and anti bounce weights. Prior to that you had to deal with JAC on those and that was never a pleasant experience. Buy a CMMG kit and never look back !!!

Mr. Dave or anybody really, Do you have dedicated Forum for asking M16 type questions? I am sure there is another website I could go to, but I like the folks better here. Thanks.

sc269,

This is the correct forum to discuss M16's. I'm not going to add an M16 forum, because there is one on Uzitalk. Uzitalk's owner and I are friends, and when I assumed ownership of this site, we both agreed not to add forums that already exist on each other's sites. That's why he has Uzi, MAC, and S&W Model 76 boards, and we don't have them here. It's why he doesn't have a Thompson board on his site. We do both have Reising and Sten boards, but they were in place prior to 2008 when Machinegunbooks.com became Machinegunboards.com.

So, you are welcome to discuss M16's here, but I'm not going to add a dedicated forum for that weapon.

Thanks!

I have a couple CMMG conversion kits, an older stainless steel and a year old Bravo; and a mix of CMMG and Black Dog Machine ((BDM) stick magazines, plus a couple CMMG sear trips and two anti-bounce weights from CMMG and one from J.A. Ciener. Both conversions work very well in a number of 5.56 uppers that I've used them in, though the bronze collar on the Bravo kit had to be turned down about 0.15 mm to fit into one of the non-mil spec uppers. Also, I had to grind the feet down on one of the CMMG anti-bounce weights to get it to slide freely.

That said, if I were starting out with no AR-15/M16 .22 LR parts and wanted a dedicated .22 LR setup, I'd get a Palmetto State Armory .22 LR upper; a sear trip and an anti-bounce weight from J.A. Ciener; a Boonie Packer AR-15/M16 BETTER-MAG S&W M&P 15-22 mag adapter; a couple 10 round and a half dozen 25 round S&W M&P 15-22 stick mags; and one or two BDM 50 round S&W M&P 15-22 drums. I'd also probably buy a McFadden speed loader plus the adapter for the S&W M&P 15-22 stick mags, even though the mags have a loading assist.

Best of luck with whatever you decide to pursue.

MHO, YMMV, etc.

sc269 ... Your unused Colt conversion kit may, (may) be the older military M231 .22rf conversion kit. Does your kit have the one or perhaps two 10 rd .22rf mags that slip into a complete 20 or 30 round USGI aluminum magazine? If so it may be collectible.

Good news, bad news. The older M231 military kits were 100% reliable with some easy fitting/tuning. Ours fit into the USGI 30 rd aluminum mags but not the 20 rounders. Just use high speed .22rf ammo. The bad news is spare parts nowadays may be difficult.

A short story. Years ago when the Cub Scouts of America had rifle marksmanship merit badges we instructors would have a graduation day using the M231 kits in CAR 15 rifles. The kids got to hose SA from the hips at pop cans. They quickly learned trigger control.

Much fun. Long ago, far away. :) Accuracy with the M16 barrels was lousy but acceptable for the application. Nowadays lots of people make complete .22rf top ends with proper barrel bore diameter and rifling twist. Also parts today are doable. Just some ideas.

Edited for s/p, w/w.

Thanks HB of CJ, I pulled the trigger on the CMMG BCG from Midway. Had the bolt and the mag on sale for 149.00. I had to order the trip and weight from CMMG, Im going to check it out, if everything is OK, I'll buy a barrel from CMMG and build and upper.
