Question For The Pro's

Recommended Posts

First,hi all. This is my fisrt post.

Have a question about my A.O. 1927 A1.

I was thinking about making it in to a SBR awhile back.I know what it takes to get this done, here in Michigan. So one day I was at the local gun show and I was talking to a Dealer about this idea. He told me not to bother with the S.B.R. stuff. He said I can have it registered as a pistol if I put a short barrel on it.I said to him that don't sound right. He said it's not a problem, just send it back to Khar and have them do the work and reregister it back to you as a pistol. http://www.machinegunbooks.com/forums/invboard1_1_2/upload/html/emoticons/blink.gif I think he nuts but it worth asking you guys if you ever herd of this being done.

The person who advised you this is full of S---. I have a 27 which I made into a SBR - You must go thru the same paper work as if you are registering a full auto gun. There is a $200. tax stamp and the usual wait for the paper work to clear. Don't have the Bbl until after the paper has cleared.

There are many people on this site who have done the same thing. This gun was never a pistol, never will be a pistol - its a rifle and will be a rifle forever.

Any dealer who told you this has not read the regs which ATF provides to dealers. Just plain stupid!

If Kahr could make a pistol from a 27 they would be doing it and selling it now...

Supershooter is right the gun would have to be further modified to no longer accept a buttstock in order to legally consider it a pistol.

Don't try to play games with ATF you will loose if caught. As for the SBR you do know Kahr sells them already shortened from the factory?

You can make one yourself cheaper than if you purchased it from Kahr. If you purchase from Kahr you will have to pay a dealer to transfer the gun. The Kahr SBR is over priced.

If you do it youself you will fill out the paper work to make a SBR and send it in to ATF yourself with the check for $200.

When the paper work returns have a person like PK change the Bbl which you obtain after the paper work clears. PK may even have Bbls.

You will save several hundred dollars - don't purchase the Bbl from Kahr - they are overpriced and lack the quality of a GI Bbl - I have purchase 2 Bbls from Kahr - both had bad chambers - Junk.

There are GI Bbls on Ebay and in the shotgun news all the time.

After all, a semi-automatic NFA weapon that is not a 1927 Colt would be a waste of money anyway. At least IMHO.

My best advice would be to move out of MI and buy the real thing and forget about it. Welcome to the boards.

Jr,

You can own the real thing in MI. Just get a C&R. Simple, cheap.

I am curious what the name of the dealer here who gave that advice, but (and as it was noted here before) you hear some of the strangest sh*t at gun shows!

What show was it? What dealer?

Thanks for the info.I thought that dealer was wrong, I wasn't sure.I wish I can remember his name, but my memory has failed me,but the gunshow was at Gibralter Trade Center in Taylor.Hardrede I think the dealer was confused about the 30 inch rule, thanks.

C&R is the way to go here, but I don't know if I'm up for it or not.

By the way I just got my 50 rnd drum from Kahr.I'm rating it at a 6 out of 10. Some of the stamping could be better on the key and the drum it's self has "forming" scuff marks around the base of the drum. The blue looks to be a quick half*ss job. Not to satisfied with it for how much they charge for the thing. http://www.machinegunbooks.com/forums/invboard1_1_2/upload/html/emoticons/mad.gif

Is this common with the drums or is Kahr just not up to par with quality control and charge you a arm and a leg for what you get.(This should have been another thread...sry) http://www.machinegunbooks.com/forums/invboard1_1_2/upload/html/emoticons/huh.gif

If you really want a newer short-barrel, and you don't mind the lack of stock, there's always the 1927A5 (if you can find one, and if it's legal in MI). Out of production since '94 (I wish they'd do another run), standard West Hurley QC issues, made from alloy instead of real steel, and a rather big pistol, but ATF legally considers it a pistol. You might wanna check your state laws, though. (For a while, I was looking at an A5 for CCW, but handling a full-auto '28A1 and discussing Thompsons with its owner nudged me away from that idea. Still interested in one for reenacting/other recreational use, though...)

Anyway, welcome aboard, Elbow.

Welcome Elbow! http://www.machinegunbooks.com/forums/invboard1_1_2/upload/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif This is the clearing-board for all relevant Thompson information. The people who frequent this board are generally very well informed about Class II and III firearms. http://www.machinegunbooks.com/forums/invboard1_1_2/upload/html/emoticons/smile.gif We can be a quirky bunch, but always informative!! http://www.machinegunbooks.com/forums/invboard1_1_2/upload/html/emoticons/blink.gif http://www.machinegunbooks.com/forums/invboard1_1_2/upload/html/emoticons/cool.gif Regards, Walter
