Type 11 inconsistent primer strikes

Recommended Posts

Got type 11 restoration finished and went to shoot it. I am getting very inconsistent primer strikes. Loading both PRVI and Graf Brass, tried winchester and CCi primers. No pattern to it all. I am using RCBS priming tool that is attached to the bench, so I think primers are getting fully seated. Bolt is clean and well lubricated. Had an extra spring that I got in a parts kit, swapped it out, same thing. Gas cylinder is screwed all the way in.

A couple of clips ran fine. Last one 1st , 3rd and 5th rounds shot, with the gun cycling, but light strikes on rounds 2 and 4.

Thanks for any suggestions you may have.

Possible issues:

Ammo: make sure the primers are not recessed all and are seated so as to be flush wih the base of the case; cartridge case lengths need to be checked to insure that the dimension from shouldre to base is correct.

Do the fired primers have a deep indentation? Assuming the case length is correct, the depth of the indentation will indicate if the firing pin is worn or OK.

Good lubrication of the firing pin in the bolt and at the rear end where the rise and fall of the locking block cams it in and out. Anything that slows down the bolt will result in light strikes. This includes the feed system and oprod which should be free in all its parts.

Chamber headspace might be slightly too long and firing pin is pushing the cartridge forward slightly when bolt is in battery. Remove the barrel. Take the firing pin from the bolt and put a fresh round in the boltface so it is held by the extractor and insert the case into the chamber of the barrel. Press the bolt forward to see if the boltface is contacting the breech face. There should be a slight gap so the case is compressed slightly in the chamber on lockup and ignition.

Headspace is not adjustable but can be modified when it is too short but not when it is too long.

All I can think of at the moment......
