"Lone Wolf" Gonzaullas's Remington Model 8 Police

Recommended Posts

One time, I had gotten into an argument in a Facebook group with a guy who was alleging that there were Remington Model 8 rifles modified to fire full-automatic, and he showed a picture of a Model 8 with a long curved magazine and a TSMG vertical foregrip as proof. I had recognized the photo as an auction listing photo from Rock Island. So, I contacted them through their Facebook page, asking if they could provide a link to the auction in which the rifle was sold. The person with which I was communicating was extremely helpful, producing a link to the auction listing in no time. Long story short, the rifle is in fact semi-automatic, and the guy was wrong. In the process, I found out that the rifle was the property of the Texas Ranger discussed above, Manuel Trazazas "Lone Wolf" Gonzaullas.

It is a very interesting rifle due to the modifications made to it. The rifle is a Model 8 Police, fitted with a 15-round detachable magazine, made by the Peace Officer Equipment Company of St. Joseph, Missouri, and a beefier foregrip, also part of the modifications made by POE Co to convert the Model 8 to Police configuration. The modifications made by Gonzaullas (or by other(s) to his specifications; I don't have any information regarding that) include the TSMG foregrip as previously stated, a tang-mounted Lyman aperture rear sight, a side-mounted commercial M1907-type sling, and an enlarged bolt handle knob for surer grip when running the action.

Well, there were Remingtons converted, personally handled one years ago. Winchester 07s were also converted. I understand there is a Lebman converted 07 at the Bay of Pigs museum in Cuba...9mm fed with a modified 32rd P08 trommel drum.

Yes, I am aware of the Lebman conversions. The gun in Cuba, however, is not a Lebman conversion. It was the creation of Captain Regino Camacho, a Spanish gunsmith and veteran of the Spanish Civil War, and Comandante William Alexander Morgan, and was known as the "Cuban Winchester". As far as I know, its current whereabouts are unknown.

Getting back to the Model 8, in what locality does it reside? What kind of work was done to it and by who? Was it select-fire, or full-auto only? Was it adapted to use a detachable magazine of some kind? If so, what capacity? Did you do any shooting with it or just examine it?

My apologies for all the questions. Machine guns of any kind are of great interest to me.

I've tracked down three different Model 07 conversions similar to the one famously used in Cuba. These were all converted to 9×19mm and used modified TM08 drums fitted into ordinary Model 07 magazines. All of them seem to be full-auto, had the stock and barrel sawn-off, and two also had a long Maxim-type sound suppressor. They were used by criminals in the northeast USA in the mid- to late 1930s.

Cheers
