Couple Sten Build Questions

Recommended Posts

Hey everybody. Been waiting awhile to build my MKII semi auto Sten. Have some money to do it now. Have a semi auto tube coming next week from Indianapolis Ordinance. Have to wait till the semi auto Bolts come back in stock. Hopefully next month they said.

First question I have is can you build a Pistol Sten and use a Pistol Grip and the short barrel without having the get SBR approval from the ATF. I spoke to them today. And they said it should not be a problem. That was only one agents input. Another could tell me differant I suppose. All I know is you can build a AR15 receiver as a pistol. And have a sub 16 inch barrel. But maybe the Sten is in a different ruling class? Any input appreciated there.. I would not mind submitting the Paperwork. But right now I would like to just use the pistol grip to get going. Indianapolis Ordinance said they cannot help with advice on a pistol grip and short barrel.. Funny, they sell them though,LOL

Just want to make sure I do everything here correctly.

Next question is, what do all the marking mean on my Sten Kit? Maybe someone can decipher them.

I am sure as I build, I will have questions. I have a small Mill and Lathe. Hoping that is a little easier than using a drill press and Dremel.

Thanks for any input.

You can make a semi-auto STEn pistol without any hassle. There is a lot of info out there on how to make a legal semi-auto, so I'm not going to address that. A short barrel and pistol grip with no stock makes it clearly a pistol and not an NFA weapon. If you later want to add a stock, you can legally make it a Short-Barrelled Rifle (SBR) by filing an ATF Form 1.

If you are going to mark it, mark it on the receiver tube. Non-NFA home-made firearms do not need to be marked, although ATF recommends it.

Your state and local laws may require something different.

I understand the full stock and SBR stamp. I have two registered full autos. Been through that stuff before. Back in the day it was only 3 months approval time though. Now it seems a year or more.

I know how to do the semi build. Have a semi tube coming from IO next week. Then a semi bolt when they are back in stock. I assume the semi bolt kit and receiver tube come with aleast some instructions also. Just want to make the ATF is telling me correctly that I can use a pistol grip with the short barrel. I have seen builds on the net using the pistol grip. So I assume it is OK as why else would anyone use a pistol grip if they had approval for a SBR already.

Thanks for the info and I will check out the other suggested also.
