USMC M2 Carbine Manual, 1952 - Any Others Dedicated Solely to M2?

Recommended Posts

I recently acquired a USMC manual dedicated solely to the M2 Carbine. This is the first manual I recall that is for the M2 Carbine, without also referencing the M1. Does anyone else know of any other manual dedicated solely to the M2 Carbine?

The manual indicates it was printed in a batch of 20,000 at USMC Quantico, Virginia on 12/19/51, for release in 1952. It indicates it is for units having access to the weapon. It covers the description, nomenclature, disassembly and assembly, functioning and stoppages of the weapon without the use of any diagrams or photos.

Your thoughts on this manual are appreciated. I will probably submit its details to The Carbine Club, because I don't see it referenced anywhere. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

David,

That looks like an instructional manual used in The Basic School (TBS) for Officer Candidates / New Lieutenants. Since it says "extention course" it must have been for Reserve Officers and other Navy types who did lateral transfers into the USMC. As such, it is likely it is Student Guide for New Lieutenants for familiarity with weapons, and "not" a formal weapons manual itself, hense lack of photos, and detailed drawings.

That's my first look at this. This is the same type of cover still used today for Lieutenants at TBS. However, still a great score.

When I received this manual a year and a half ago, I wrote a quick summary about it for The Carbine Club. At the time I submitted it, I was told it would be in line to be published, and would probably not appear until 2016. Well, that was correct. The Carbine Club is now online, and has eliminated its physical newsletter, but my short article is published online in the January 2016 edition. Marty Back appended the article with some additional, insightful USMC information.

If you did not know the Carbine Club has a new website, you can still be among the first 100 members. Here is the link:
