Second half is a bit jerky as I edited out the time between the bursts that my buddy was firing to keep the video just a little small. deerslayer Posted June 16, 2004 Author Report Share Posted June 16, 2004 We were a little worried about a grass fire, so didn't shoot as much as I was planning to. Tracers were remanufactured using .223 red tip tracer which is dirt cheap. Lots of time invested, but little money. I'll get a 50 round drum dump sometime later. cavediver Posted June 16, 2004 Report Share Posted June 16, 2004 We used to make tracers by putting a small amount of 0000 steel wool on top of the powder in reloads and shooting from a Mac 10 at night. So let me get this straight Dan....you use .223 tracers and (I'm guessing) driil and epoxy them into the bases of 230 hardball bullets?? Here I've been farting around with tracer recipes involving heavy metals and chemicals that don't ever work consistently for me....and all I need is a drill and some epoxy!! (I'm oversimplifying this, to be sure, but it really can't be that difficult!!??) Any powder in particular work better than others to light these babies off?? Please. let us know your basic procedure for this.... PLEASE?? I too tried different things to get tracers, bought the tracer compounds etc... never got them to work. So, finally tried this. Took a .223 and cut the end off, drilled out the back of a .45 (and others too) and epoxied them together. Made just a little jig to cut the .223's with a hacksaw (none have ever lit while I've cut them). And made a little jig to hold the .45's on the drill press. Make sure you get the tracers that have the copper base covering on the .223's. Some have sort of a heavy white paper and I didn't have good luck with those. Anyway, after you get things put together, then take a small drill bit and drill through that copper cap so the tracer will light right away. Using Hodgen Univerasal clays as my gunpowder. Haven't tried any others because it worked right off the bat. Be careful, it is really easy to start grass fires with these, I speak from experience! OH, assemble and use these at your own risk, I'm not a reloading expert, but I did stay at a holiday inn express. Meer pennies per round verses $1 a round for ones I've seen for sale.
