Annihilator
Dear all I have this oiler in my collection. The person who gave it to me told me it was for the M2 Hyde SMG another source said it was an early M1 carbine oiler for the I-cut stockMerry Christmas Pierre Edited December 22, 2021 by Annihilator
DougStump
What you have appears to be one of the accessories for the M209 code converter, a piece of WWII cryptography equipment. If it has the rod on the cap it's the oiler (8 in the picture). If not, it's the container for spare ink rollers (10).

DougStump
Bridgeport, Oops, you're right. I didn't spot the tabs sticking out, the M209 oilers don't have those. But I got an alibi! When I posted this morning I'd only had one cup of coffee.
emmagee1917
The one with the cap with two " ears " is the M2 SMG oiler . The oiler fit into a hole in the stock with a plate over it . I assume there was a coil spring in the hole . Anyway , the oiler went in , you pushed and turned it , and the ears locked it into place . StrangeRanger
Apparently there are way more M2 oilers than there are M2 guns. Does anyone know how many of the roughly 400 M2s that were built have survived?
Bill DeShivs
400 M2s??
StrangeRanger
The only reference in which I could find production numbers for the Hyde/Marlin M2 SMG was Military Small Arms of the 20th Century which is admittedly not the most authoritative but It was what I had. It said about 400 were produced before the government cancelled the contract.
Bill DeShivs
I thought you were talking about the M2 carbine. Sorry.
ordnance
I believe there are two known M2 SMGs in the registry, numbers 22 and 386. Both were previously owned by Larry Smith (Smitty) of Cabin John, MD, an early and very eccentric MG collector. I know of at least one other built on a registered tube with mostly original parts and a number survive in Govt. museums. One at West Point, one at Aberdeen (now at Ft. Lee?), one at Springfield Armory, one in the former Pattern Room collection, and perhaps one or two others.
