1921A Posted May 18, 2005 Report Share Posted May 18, 2005 Oil Splatter If you're getting oil splatter from the rear of the receiver you've got to much oil in the pads and in the receiver. A couple of drops on the felt pads once in a while is plenty. If I shoot alot, I wipe a very thin smear on bottom and both sides of the bolt with my finger. Same on the Blish lock ears and rails. Oil eventually finds it's way into the pistol grip and the butt stock. I've seen more than a few Thompson over the years with ruined oil soaked wood. Merry Ploughboy Posted May 19, 2005 Author Report Share Posted May 19, 2005 Thank you all for the comments thus far. Based on what has been written the shield will be a one-off. Regarding the comments: These appear to be basically in three categories, all of which I have encountered, tried, and otherwise considered. 1) Safety goggles/glasses - fine till they get fogged up and you can't see. You still get some splatter on your shoulder and not worth anything for shooting from the hip. 2) Using too much oil - To quote someone else "Blish locks like to be wet". No matter how little oil is used, shoot enough at one time and oil gets pumped out the pilot tube hole - maybe not a lot when you only use a little oil but it's still there. Anyway when you store the gun buttstock down as I do in my gun safe the oil gets down into the hole and pumped out no matter how lightly you oil the inners. Also, the shield can be left on the gun and actually prevents the dripping of oil on the buttstock thus preventing the discoloration and potential long term stock damage noted. As an aside, with "shooter grade" stocks at $3, I replaced mine a long time ago and put my original stock away for safekeeping. 3) Use grease not oil - My gun came with an oil bottle in the buttstock not a greasegun. If Thompson, Eichkoff and Payne wanted me to use grease they would have given me a greasegun. Anyway I tried it and found I get grease spatter instead of oil spatter. Grease thins out and gets pumped out the pilot hole just like oil does when you shoot enough at one time. Also, grease tends to hold the powder residue more than oil does. As I stated, no plans to make more than one shield, so I'll see you at the range - I'll be the Thompson shooter with the clear safety glasses and clean shirt. However on my last trip to the range I was shooting a new Kimber Gold Match II, and I think I may have gotten spattered in my left eye with Clenzoil. I had the slide fairly wet. I inadvertently forgot the glasses on a trip from the bench to the target. One thing for certain the use of the eye has gone down hill VERY fast.
