MrBill
I am still in the market for a BAR and I always seem to need help. Currently on Sub Guns there is a Winchester #5404 that i believe is being offered by Frank Gopert for $44,995 or OBO. Any thoughts and opinions? My knowledge of BAR'S consists of shooting one at Cheyenne Wells and reading Jim Ballous book. If you think the machine gun price guide is helpful or accurate they currently list recent sales C&R BAR'S around 33K with several at 60K. I know Frank used to have used car salesmen reputation but i have never done business with him. Does a Winchester command a large premium over a NESA? What do you think in today's market,a fair price would be for the buyer and seller?
GaryKeim
This is a WWI-era gun that appears to have some WWII upgrades (buttstock end cap), while a NESA is WWII-era. It looks to be refinished since the scratches are dark. I paid 30K for my May 1918 Winchester BAR #66191.
jim c 351
Bill,Unfortunately you missed, by about 6 months, a Marlin on Frank,s for $35K. Gotta keep a sharp eye out.On Franks Winchester, I agree with Gary, may be refinished. In addition Frank is asking 10 K more than just 6 months ago.Frank does seem to be heavily stocked right now and may take a lowball offer.Jim C

jl7422
Re: Group Ind. BAR's; it is largely held that near the end of the run the quality control suffered to the extend that some of those guns require extensive work to make right. If I recall, the recoil slide was not centered in the receiver on the worst and caused multiple problems. That being said, I bought an unfired Group Ind. BAR several years ago from about 3/4 of the way through the production run and it appears to be to spec. and has run perfectly on the smallest gas port opening from day-1.
