WH Thompson Repairs and Kahr M1s?

Recommended Posts

Was looking at my Thompson the other day and noticed my rear upper reciever pin was missing(The button you press to separate the upper and lower recievers). I ordered a new pin from Kahr/AO and a spring but the spring does not fit properly.

I have no idea what I would need to do to keep the spring and button in the little slot.

And my rear Lyman sight is missing two of the pins, causing the sight to stick up off the reciever. Are they just pins that need to be pressed in or fitted?

Was also wondering about if I should buy another Thompson, the Kahr Arms M1 Rifle. Mixed reviews about them and missed my chance to buy one last month for $999.

Is it as so much as replacing parts and springs so it runs better? Also would like to SBR it and the barrel removal isn't the same either from what I've heard. They do have already SBR'd M1s and I might just put in a order for one of those if it's an okay price.

The spring is correct I'm sure, they are larger in diameter than the hole and need a little persuasion to go in. Keep trying.

On the sight are you talking about the rivets?

Your cheapest route to SBR is a form 1. If you personally cut your existing barrel with a saw to 10 inches after you get your paperwork back, then it's perfectly legal to have another gunsmith like me put on a nice 10 inch barrel.

There's lots of posts on the quality of west Hurley vs various vintages of kahr guns. Personally I'd upgrade a west Hurley before I bought a new kahr.

Ah yeah the spring is bigger on one side and smaller on the other. When I tried putting it in it was big to the out and small in. It got stuck and wasn't very springy.

Yes the rear sight rivets, that's what they were called.

Yeah I have been thinking of either chopping the barrel or getting an old 10 inch one from a original M1 or parts sight etc if I get one.

Barrel removal / replacement is the same - and a PITA without the right tools.

Unless you are getting a parts kit for other reasons, you might consider a new barrel from Thompsonbarrels-dot-com. His are nice and reasonably priced.

As far as your sight, you need new rivets. You can send it to Dan (above) and he can fix some or all of it for you.

Good luck with your project, Timmy.

Dan built my 1927a1 into a 1928 sbr. Very reasonable. Do his recommended upgrades, steel rivet staking the rear sight, e-z takedown and I had him mill it for the 1928a1 removable buttstock. Got my 10.5 inch bbl from numrich. Good luck.
