It is my understanding that the "brass / bronze" magazine housing ( bronze is called gun metal by the Royal Navy, the early sailing ships gun barrels were made of this) came from the factory with a blackened finish.

Unfortunately my Lanchester has also been treated in this way by a previous owner, and the stock made all shiny too.

I dont mind the bare brass. What I dont like is the mirror finish vs a bare/untouched brass look. Needs patina.

I think this deal died due to a couple of reasons anyways.

Condition may not be up to my standards. I think

Someone used thick paint vs a normal gun finish.

Yes, I like my firearms to show a bit of "history" and not appear to have spent the war in storage.

I do like the stock on the gun you have pictured.

Commonwealth firearms late in WWII and post war often had "stoving" applied, its a flat finish paint.

I think that was (in some cases) applied down at the unit level to save the time and cost of sending back to depot for refinish.

I have seen it on a LOT of STEN guns.

I wish I had the pleasure of handling a lot of Lanchesters for reference.

The Royal Navy used those guns for a very long time.

If memory serves my Father spotted one in the hands of a RN Sailor during the Falklands campaign.

He did tell me he trained with one during WWII while serving in the R.N.V.R.
