Use Flitz metal polish followed by flour to remove the blackened polish. We clean the bright work on airplanes and boats this way. It is a lot faster to use than Brasso. If you don't feel like rubbing, use Sweets 7.62. Just put it on, wait 15 minutes, and wipe it off thoroughly as it is ammonia based. The rod will look like new.

Phil-- Sounds like you went through some of that Army stuff. You remember when you would spend a good part of the evening making little circles on your boot toes, spit shining with cotton swabs, alcohol, and Esquire. The next day you would trudge through the mud with them. The gun-ho guys would burn off the lacquer on their lapel buttons and Brasso them.
