Got to see my MP40 before the long wait...

Recommended Posts

Got to check out my MP40 before it started it's jail time. It is a Charles Erb gun and seems nice to me (limited experience with MGs). My father and I both compared it to my Thompson, that is also in jail, and both agreed we liked the initial feel of the MP40 better. Is the 207 that is marked on most of the parts something Erb put on the gun, or are those original serial numbers? Any other thoughts/observations would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Hi, it looks to me as if Erb put those numbers on the gun himself to give it an "authentic" German matching number look. I owned an Erb tube gun for about 20 years. It ran like a raped ape and I am sure you will love yours. I traded mine for an original C&R gun. I really like the C&R gun but still miss the Erb tube gun. I think the feel of the MP40 is a lot nicer than any Thompson. The Thompson just seems heavy and clunky to me whereas the MP40 just has a natural feel to it kind of like a Luger. You will eventually wind up with a C&R MP40 also. Be careful because this is how it starts haha If you have any other questions just ask there are many people here that will be happy to give you help and advice. Take care and have a Good Easter, Haenelistklasse

Very nice. its a 1940 slab side mag well which has extra value. the #'s on the mag well are added most likely as ive not seen one that was #'d

if you'd like a minty bakelite body you can check with Alex from the Mp40 registry to see if he has anymore left...i grabbed one from him which is excellent to mint...just enough wear to be real.

the resting bar may be a reproduction, but then its a tube gun, so its not a big deal...just thought id mention it if you dont know

its a very enjoyable gun to shoot. it is all front heavy so muzzle rise is near 0. Its one of the smoothest subguns and i would agree much more controllable than a thompson

mine has never jammed once

The serial numbers Charlie assigned to his MP40s always have an letter e suffix. He would stamp the s/numbers on all the parts to make it a "matching number" gun.

He did mark waffenamts on a lot of his parts. I was in his shop (years ago) there was a guy there who was making the waffenamt stamps; in the days before laser engraving.

Most of the MP40s he did where pretty nice.

  • 4 weeks later...

I got my tax stamp on May 7th. They cashed the check April 26th 2018.

It is going to be longer than 9 months I'm afraid.

Now my 2 receivers are at John Andrewski's to be made into working guns. He's figuring 6 weeks for the Sten, 3 months for my MP40.
