7.62 x 25 Sten Variation

Recommended Posts

Interesting Sten variation I encountered while deployed..... SF Group we where attached to kept a large selection of Foreign Weapons.......I got to dig throughit and found what I thought was a MK II. Turns out it was a handmade "Khyber Pass" Sten in 7.62 x 25. Never fired it but a 9mm would chamber almost and was way to big for the barrel but a 7.62 x 25 fit nicely. The barrel screws into the trunnion directly which is permenantly attached to the heat shield....this in turn screws into the mag well, ejection portion of the receiver and is held on to the receiver with a set screw.receiver was thin metal and the trigger group looked handmade. From three feet away it looked authentic...... Buddy sending pics will post shortly....Anybody ever see anything like that.....?.

It might be Chinese. The Nationalist Chinese received STENs from the British during WWII. After the Communist overthrow, some were converted to 7.62x25.

That's what mine is above. It wasn't the British supplying the STENs, it was Longbranch who supplied them direct to the Chinese

I also have a Long Branch STEN MK II, with Chinese markings. It is dated 1945 and is in excellent condition. It is 9m/m Luger caliber. I assume it was sold off bY the

canadian government when it was in the pipeline when the war ended and so did the contract for them. One might think that those in Chinese hands might be converted to 30 caliber because of the must have been a vast supply of ammo.

Oh right. Yes, that makes sense the Canadians were also providing them with Browning Hi-Powers and BRENs in 8mm.

Ok so here are some of the pics i finally found.........After looking at them the details are a bit different, the trunnion is mounted inside the receiver.....It is not chinese, there are no markings on it at all......I am about 95% sure this is a homemade sten copy....

It looks like a Sten Mk5 copy or a copy of a Foreign STEN copy, so a copy of a copy so to speak.

Some parts look very well made and finished (Like the body)but the breech block looks really poor in quality, the feed horns are way off being centrelised.

What I think is so amazing is that every single piece of this weapon was handmade from scratch to include the rifiling in the barrel. Knocked out with a forge a hammer and a file with maybe some casting (like for the bolt). That is if it is a "Khyber Pass" copy as I suspect. The quality of the magazine is actually very good!

I've got a genuine 7.62 x 25mm Tok gun. Post the photos up when you can.

Its been a long time - but do you still have the Tok gun ? I am seeking to "engineer " a Toc gun from a MK II sten I have - I believe the bolt had some machining done to it -

Initially photos of the bolt would be excellent !

The bolt needs to have the grooves that go on either side of the magazine feed lips milled wider by about 4mm to clear the wider, dual feed, PPS-43 magazine feed lips. Also the magazines need to have the upper tab at the top ground down a bit to clear the STEN receiver.

Here are few pictures that should help with the modifications. I measured the channels that were milled into the bolt and they are 6.3mm (1/4 inch) wide. So you just have to clamp the bolt into a vice and mill the two grooves for magazine clearance. The magazine needs the upper tab ground down a bit to fit into the magazine housing and around the STEN ejector. The picture will give you a start and then just do a fit trial to see where and how much more you need to grind to make them fit. I run mine in 9mm with the 7.62x25 setup. It's much easier to load the magazines.

I'm actually curious if any Stens were chambered for .30 Luger in the past as that would not require a modification to the bolt or the magazines since its loaded to the same OAL as the 9x19 (.30 Luger is the parent case of the 9x19) and it would only require a new barrel chambered in the cartridge.

I own several Tok 33 pistols in 7.62x25 and one in 9x19 but this might be a way for folks to try a new caliber in their STENs or other subguns without major mods to their original firearms.

Sorry! I'm just a retired Ordnance Officer who misses having lathes and mills around to test ideas out!
