Magazine Catch

Recommended Posts

Does anyone know why (or have any theories as to why) the first TSMGs made by Colt had a magazine catch with no hole in it (where you put your thumb.)

Shortly after the Colt guns, all makers of the Thompson put this hole in the thumbpad of the mag catch.

Why? http://www.machinegunbooks.com/forums/invboard1_1_2/upload/html/emoticons/huh.gif

I'm just curious. http://www.machinegunbooks.com/forums/invboard1_1_2/upload/html/emoticons/tongue.gif

I believe the hole is a “tooling hole”, used to locate the part for various machining operations. The Colt parts used some other point to locate from.

Norm, Great question!

Been pondering that one for years.

Never could stand that hole, had PK fill it and do a most excellent checkering right over it.

Very Colt-like!

PK, thanks for the explanation ! It all makes perfect sense now.

(Geez, at one point I even entertained the thought that they were trying to save weight overall!) http://www.machinegunbooks.com/forums/invboard1_1_2/upload/html/emoticons/unsure.gif

Speaking of magazine catches...

I just received mine from iDave. The instructions say to ritate the the magaziane catch counterclockwise to its full limit and lift it from the receiver. (????)

Does this mean that I have to remove the rocker and pivot, safety, pivot plate, trigger and sear and the remaining components first???

Of course, the dissassembly intructions from Kahr are no existent on removal of the magazine catch or even any portion of the frame group.

So any help would be appreciated.

I will assume you have a semi gun (no pivot).

You need to remove the safety and then press the pivot plate so the ends that normally protrude out the left side of the frame are flush. The end of the trigger pin of the pivot plat stops the rotation of the mag catch when it’s fully seated. You can then rotate the mag catch far enough to clear the post (that engages the box magazine) from it’s hole in the trigger guard and then pull the mag catch out.
