I was asked a question awhile back, that I couldn't answer. I have a Savage built ANM2 in .30 call. Its been a good gun over the years. I was asked while I was re-assembling it, "What do the cutouts that are on the top of the barrel extension do" ? I starred at that part for a long time and really had NO ANSWER ???

So I hope somebody here has an answer, because now I'm curious. See the attached file on what I'm talking about.

A hearty Thank you for those that have an answer.

Remove weight? High rate of fire gun.

That could be ? I originally thought that they were there to improve flow of the spent cartridge or reduce the chance of jamming since cartridge is basically falling out ? But after looking at the British version, they have cutouts in the front, but none in the back ?
