Mk VII
Mine's the Gun Room Press edition; did the text differ in any way?
dalbert
The Gun Room Press edition had an additional chapter on West Hurley Thompsons that was written by the late George Nonte, without Bill Helmer's input. When I helped Bill regain the rights to his book, and to republish it as a second edition through Chipotle a few years ago, we eliminated the Nonte chapter, and Bill and I collaborated to write the new West Hurley/Kahr chapter. colt21a
David thanks for that info i never cracked the cover on the new ed. And my 69 edition is in wrapper. How that got purchased and Bill signed it 20 years later. And started the Capone book Is a fun story in itself.Every Thompson owner should have a copy, and non Thompson owner for the History alone. It started me on the track in 1969. while i was still messing with M-14'S M-16'S AND M-60'S. TD.
A good read - for sure! William Helmer did for the Thompson submachine gun what General Thompson, Theodore Eickhoff, Oscar Payne and George Goll did for hand held weapons with a massive amount of fire power. The Gun That Made The Twenties Roar should be required reading for anyone that enjoys the Thompson guns. And those footnotes! Those of us that do original research have poured through those footnotes over the years looking for clues to additional information. Yes, Helmer's scholarly efforts should be held in high esteem. This one book really serves as a foundation to all the (accurate) stories and books that have followed. The Thompson submachine gun defines the word iconic. I know on this forum it is as American as baseball and apple pie. I highly recommend everyone that has not read TGTMTTR to obtain a copy and begin what will be an enjoyable journey. I like the original Macmillan editions best but the newer Gun Room Press editions will suffice. Shop smart as this book is not expensive. There is also a second edition by Helmer (greatly assisted by our own David Albert), but my fingers usually turn to the original edition first...and back to the footnotes.
