It has 4 digit numbers, all different, on the inside of the buttplate, on the stock under the buttplate, and underneath the slide assembly The wood stock is the early non crossbolt type, looks to have been varnished over the original finishWith no marks on the wood visible to me. TD. Posted January 3, 2019 Report Share Posted January 3, 2019 There is no such thing as a "savage commercial tsmg stock." Butt stocks attached to Savage Commercial Thompsons would mirror what would be found on the numerous Savage Thompsons that were sold directly to military organizations. Based on the pictures, I feel pretty confident it is not a Colt's product. If the numbers on the butt plate, butt stock and slide assembly match, then it is very likely you have an early Savage butt stock. I have seen numbers on the slide assembly with an "S" prefix on early Savage butt stocks. Pictures of the numbers on these three parts would certainly help in identifying this butt stock. We have a long time Board member that is a resident expert on butt stocks and numbering. The varnish is not a problem to remove. However, it appears the butt stock may have been sanded in the past. Does the sides of the butt plate protrude from the stock. If so, this is a clear sign of sanding that would go hand in hand with the current varnish finish. However, if all the numbers match, this condition can be rectified by a craftsman like Dan Block. Early Savage butt stocks with all matching numbers are difficult to find. DLansky Posted January 3, 2019 Report Share Posted January 3, 2019 The font on the back of the stock is different from the font on my Colt stocks. the 5 is missing the serif and the numbers are smaller. gijive Posted January 3, 2019 Report Share Posted January 3, 2019 Agree with TD and Dave, It is just an early WWII Savage buttstock that has been rebuilt at some point, otherwise, all the numbers would have matched. The font on the Colt buttstocks is different from the early Savage stock. Another interesting thing about the early numbered Savage stocks is that I have never seen one where the numbers exceed four digits. Colt buttstocks extend into the five-digit range, but I have yet to see a Savage stock with five numbers. My guess is that they made the stocks in batches and only used four characters for each batch or did they stop numbering them at the 10,000 range? Haven't seen any duplicate Savage numbers but you would have to look at a lot of stocks, that would be pretty rare. I guess we can only speculate, we'll probably never know how many they numbered.
