Repro Spare Parts Boxes Invite Fraud

Recommended Posts

TSMG Poobah Tracie Hill takes critical shot at the repro spare parts boxes offered by Herigstad & Richardson in the issue of the TCA News that arrived today. Evidently the repros are so close to the original that fraud by subesquent resellers is invited. Mr. Hill writes that the only way to tell the repro from the original is if you really know your stuff and you have handled an original previously. Edited by ftc3906

Translation: I and other owners who paid thousands of dollars more than these boxes are realistically worth, stand to lose money because all boxes are now suspect, and won't bring in those ridiculous high prices anymore. :-)

More power to Gordon!

I think AZDOUG hit it on the head after reading the latest trashing in the TCA letter. I only wish I had one to take to Va for the deal and have it on a table and Tracie walk by. That would put some spark in the day wouldn't it!!??

But in the same breath, ron I'm with you on the get over it.

This is the same shallow logic the antis use to argue for gun control. Guns kill people, right? Reproduction boxes cause fraud. Not the crooks who peddle them to the ignorant.

I contend there are NO sellers of originals so everyone who thinks the orginal owners are upset because they will lose their value I say like Ron does go find one for sale, good luck. been there done that!!! wink

I have not read Tracie's article but I agree with him there is too much opportunity for fraud.

I further stated on an earlier post that we have other reproduction TSMG items around, this just means that now those who are looking to buy a metal spare parts kit have to be careful now where they did not have to previously.

Personally, I like the Altoids box idea. That is what I think a parts box is worth.

Since no one sells their originals anyway, GH has filled a niche for those that want their hard cases complete.

If I had the desire for the original look, I would buy a GH box, as I can't see spending (was it $4K the originals are supposed to be worth?) that kind of money for a stupid metal box unless I either had a hole in my head, had oodles of extra cash around that i couldn't possibly find anything else to spend it on, or i was buying it with the hope it would be saleable for $6K next year.

Hell, in forty years, they will all be *original*, and the people that could have told one from the other won't be around anyway, and who cares? I don't.

Guys,

Fill me in, please. How much for the repro boxes and what is included in the box if anything?

The reproduction parts kit will go nice with my own hand made repro 1921 wood, my 1928 lower modified to Richardson's specs, my modified NOS M1A1 barrel that has fins cut on it like an early 1921, a P.K. machined 27A1 knob that now looks like a 1921, on my 1927A1 Kahr (Now a registered SBR). I do have one original part, an original Lyman sight, but so what!!! I also plan to make my own custom fit FBI case for the SBR 27A1.

I think you guys get the picture. Some of us can't get ahold of a 1921 Colt or 28 Savage. So in the mean time, its still a free country (unless Kerry get elected) and I think we can buy or sell anything that is legal.

I would never pass anything off as original that was not. One problem in the future will be, like someone has already said, nobody will know what is and what isn't "real".

Anyway, got to have a parts kit!!!

Never having been able to find an original, I purchased two - one for my cased 21 and one for my cased 28 - I really don't care what my estate does with my guns...

GET OVER IT!

Didn't we just go through all the BS about potential fraud over the repro parts boxes just a few weeks ago? How many times can we beat a dead horse?

Just my .02...so flame away if any of y'all like. I got my Nomex undies on.

I love my spare parts box, cleaning rod from Gordon...looks great on display...too much money for originals if you find them just to display and show friends like I did tonight...everyone got to enjoy how 1920s case would look...pretty cool, but you guys missed the underlying drama here...Tr.H. been feudin`with D.R. for a while right?....so who`s the machinist behind G.H.?...2+2=....no trip to D.C...doh... http://www.machinegunbooks.com/forums/invboard1_1_2/upload/html/emoticons/wink.gif

I remember when everyone - most everyone - on this board was praying, and hope that someone would make a parts box. Look back on the old posts. There wer3e possible sources listed who could make the case. Then reports that the box couldn't be made.

Now Gordon makes a box and some think he is the bad guy. I don't remember anyone back then saying - anything against making them.

I am not sure WH lowered the price of the 21 or 28 !

Anyone with the money, and can afford a real box better be able to tell the original from the Gordon copy. Buts thats another day....

Ron,

Have you hit the nail on the head.

I had forgotten about those pior posts last year.

If you remember, everyone was putting thier name on the list to buy

one.

The only problem with Gordons box is that it is so dam good, it could be passed off as an original. I doubt it. It is not that he making hundreds, only a few and as I have said in the past, let the buyer beware. .

It is sad that a 14 year friendship is lost over a dam tin box.

I would have been willing to pay the bucks for an original but there

were none avaliable so what alternative is there.

Excellent and sensible posts guys

Nice to read.

Phil,

Perhaps your characterization of the TSMG owner/collector/aficionado is not finished. There seems to be a predominant sentiment that this type of common sense is ultra vires. Those who use the jejune argument that this topic has already been "beaten like a dead horse" might also sympathize with Cllinton during his book tour when queried about ML. He would love to move on, but there has yet to be any satisfactory answer offered.

Hell, after all this anguishing, I may just forsake the altaiods box and buy a GH box just for the hell of it. Anything that causes this much controversy can't be all bad....AZDoug

So here is the equation:

If Forgery=Good & 100% Authenticity=Bad & Controversy=Half & Half, then X must = Whatever's convenient?

Aaaaarrrrggghhh!!!!! Someone tried to kill this beast once before, didn't they? You guys slay me...you really do! http://www.machinegunbooks.com/forums/invboard1_1_2/upload/html/emoticons/blink.gif Let's put this into some perspective. In 1,000 years, if humans still inhabit Earth, what would their achaeologists make of either the original tin Thompson spare parts box, or the G.H. reproduction tin Thompson spare parts box? Will they even recognize it as a 'spare parts box', Thompson or otherwise. In the year 2525, will they simply assume that it is an antique 'spare pill box' for the pills used to form an alternate private reality? In the year 2525, will there be a man alive who still recognizes the 'Thompson spare parts box we see today'? http://www.machinegunbooks.com/forums/invboard1_1_2/upload/html/emoticons/laugh.gif http://www.machinegunbooks.com/forums/invboard1_1_2/upload/html/emoticons/cool.gif Regards, Walter

P.S. You can't take it with you, whatever it is! Tomorrow a rusted Thompson spare parts box will be no more valuable that a broken piece of Roman pottery. http://www.machinegunbooks.com/forums/invboard1_1_2/upload/html/emoticons/tongue.gif

P.P.S. Phil, just for the record, I do believe, for our present fleeting lives that G.H., or anyone else, should ensure, by mark or slight change in production, that any reproductions are readily identifiable. It would be the honest, chivalrous, 'comme il faut' thing to do. However, as you and many others, on this board and elsewhere, have noted, the ethics of the masses, the lowest common denominator, money, the 'market', dare I say it...capitalism, seem to have taken an altogether too important place in society today, alas!

P.P.S. You all know I hate communism, socialism, etc, so don't even go there!!! I am merely saying that we need to step back from the canvas to gain a better perspective of reality and balance!
