Black River Militaria CII
Read, read, read and read some more and look at pictures until you are dizzy; go to gunshows and study guns and parts so you can learn to identify them; visit friendly gunowners and have them show younteir guns and disassemble guns for you while you watch if they will do that; hang around the local gunstore and ask where there are local gunsmiths that might allow you to visit and watch; when you are old enough or can do it, consider going to gunsmithing school of which there are a number in the US.You need to have significant skills before you can really be of any use in a gunsmith’s shop.Keep in mind that a gunsmith that is training you is not getting much of his own work done.Be patient and persistent......FWIW
jim c 351
In addition to Bob's advise above, If you find you can excel at shooting sports, rifle, pistol or shotgun, you might be able to get an industry job.A local girl ,who was a former member of my wife's youth trapshooting team, an excellent trap shot, was recently hired by Browning Arms.Unfortunately, you will probably require either skill or knowledge and sometimes both .Life is so unfair.Jim C

Normal1959
I started a 22 million dollar a year (gross) business in this industry by cleaning the range and selling the brass. I used to go every night and clean and they let me keep the brass. I spent 35 years in this business before i sold it 6 years ago.Eric

Mostly 17+ year oldsTypical wage up here is a couple hundred for a weekend gig. Room and grub paid Others make more managing internet sales & shipping during the weekone of my old pals passed a couple years agoleft his entire business to a 21 year old protégéDaughters got his home, everything else but that kid ended up with tens of thousands in inventoryUnderstand he pretty much doted upon his employer, never expected the end grand slamKid got all choked up with me talking about it. Totally blindsided by it allanyways it depends on your skill setMany Men 50 or older are not really web savvynor do they understand valuation on modern military sporters that are no longer imported Understand you land a gig like this you will be part care giver, gun related employee, buddy and maybe even butt wiper depending on the level of disability
huggytree
move next door to Bob Naess and be his apprentice for free....in 10 years charge double every other smith, but get the repairs done 2x faster.....work less/make more good smiths are hard to find now....many are older....these guns are getting older and more expensive...parts are disappearing... i think a good gun smith for FA will be a very wealthy man in the future. with the average wait over a year now from most known smiths. i think there is a market for a specialty guy with fast turn around...so frustrating waiting 12 months to get a gun, then wait 12-24 months for a repair.
