How many times has Romeo and Juliet be remade with each of them being able to stand alone with the same story... I think some stories are good enough to be retold and basically be reborn to a new generation. Same with cover tunes, some are much better than the original and we would miss some really great music if all people did were "original" tunes.... jmho Sequels are my pet peeve..... The predictable results never seem to dissuade the producers/directors from attempting the folly. It would seem more prudent to remake a movie that had a good story but was ineffectually realized on the screen. The continuing complexity of special effects should not be the sole justification for remaking a classic film. At least in this 2nd "Kong" remake they had the sense to return to the original 1933 time period. But the whole point and novelty of the original film was the freshness of the material and the audience amazement at how it was done. That aspect is no longer novel, only expected. I can't think of a remake that was better than the original. Originally successful films, unlike music compositions, do not lend themselves to additional interpretations. Arthur Fliegenheimer Posted December 1, 2005 Report Share Posted December 1, 2005 The Carpenter version of "The Thing" was a decent remake because it was faithful to the original story "Who Goes There?" that Hawk's "The Thing" was based on. The original "Alien" and "Terminator" are perfect examples of originals being much more superior to their sequels. "Rocky" and "Rambo" are also proof positive of the rule that sequels continually erode the basic premise of the original film. Remake "Them!"? Again, the filmmakers would have to use the same 1950's time period for the film to make sense. But now the Sgt. Peterson character (James Whitmore) would be grabbing a West Hurley TSMG from the front seat of his squad car. That's enough reason to cancel the project. Remo Williams Posted December 2, 2005 Report Share Posted December 2, 2005 Artie, While I would prefer a 1928a1 Savage used in the possible remake to Them, I don't think that it will matter to the ants, what type of Thompson fires the .45acp into their bodies. As for Alien, the original was heavily based on "It,the Terror from Beyond Space". Good movie, but funny now how they thought what space travel would be, prior to the space program.
