Price escalation continues. Have a look at <p> http://gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.asp?...p?Item=40488750 <p>Whod'a thought it?

i know a local guy who own's chennault's m-1 carbine.the one strapped unto the back of his cockpit seat.p-40 flying tiger..and he paid a little over this one for it. with paperwork..........so what's so special about this one.. a serial number???maybe if it was a para model first one issued and made.

then again i had a minty m1 para model sold it with all the goodie's a few year's back for $1,500.00.

Yeah .. I noticed in the trailers that there were Thompsons being carried and used in the new KONG movie. I just watched the restored original last night and there were none then....*L* .. only Winchesters and what might have been Springfields...and some mystery long rifles I didn't recognize.. maybe Martini-Henrys....I was gonna post about the Tommys being used in the new one but Respected Ron beat me to it..... http://www.machinegunbooks.com/forums/invboard1_1_2/upload/html/emoticons/wink.gif Hopefully we will get some good Tommy action in the three hours of the movie's showing.... http://www.machinegunbooks.com/forums/invboard1_1_2/upload/html/emoticons/smile.gif

If you haven't seen the restored version of the Original King Kong you really should get it.. there is so much info in this one it's amazing.....I never knew a lot of what Merian C Cooper did in both WWI and WWII. Very informative... and the really amazing way that the first Kong was filmed...just really mind-boggling....

I'm not sure why it troubles me to see remakes of the old classics. Aside from the fact that the Tommys go up in price, it also says something about the demise of creativity.

How about "Battleground" instead ?

Van Johnson is great carrying around that helmet full of fresh cracked eggs http://www.machinegunbooks.com/forums/invboard1_1_2/upload/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif

I'm not sure about the "King Kong" movie affecting prices ? I guess we'll know soon enough . But , I recollect hearing that HBO is making the "Band of Brother's" sequel only the Pacific Theater is the location . This will most likely raise all the WWII related prices including Thompson's , M3's , 1911's , etc .

Not really.... Not the demise of creativity but the blossoming of it. How many times has Romeo and Juliet be remade with each of them being able to stand alone with the same story... I think some stories are good enough to be retold and basically be reborn to a new generation. Same with cover tunes, some are much better than the original and we would miss some really great music if all people did were "original" tunes.... jmho

Sequels are my pet peeve..... Other than Lucas and that little movie he made into an empire, I can't think of any sequels that were as good as the beginning film.... And even Lucas took a bad downward spiral after ESB......

The problem with remakes is that Hollywood remakes movies that were perfect the first time out. The predictable results never seem to dissuade the producers/directors from attempting the folly. It would seem more prudent to remake a movie that had a good story but was ineffectually realized on the screen.

The continuing complexity of special effects should not be the sole justification for remaking a classic film. At least in this 2nd "Kong" remake they had the sense to return to the original 1933 time period.

But the whole point and novelty of the original film was the freshness of the material and the audience amazement at how it was done. That aspect is no longer novel, only expected.

I can't think of a remake that was better than the original. Originally successful films, unlike music compositions, do not lend themselves to additional interpretations.

Rumor has it that Peter Jackson (director of the new Kong) is a known Thompson collector...hmmm...I wonder if those are his guns in the flick? ("Sure mate...we'll just use mine...it'll save us a pound or two in production costs!")

I want to see the remake of "THEM" about the giant ants. James Whitmore and James Arness blasting away with the Thompson.

Original movies that were better off left alone:

1919 "The Cabinet Of Dr. Calagari"

1921 "Nosferatu"

1943 "Sahara"

1946 "The Big Sleep"

1947 "Miracle on 34th Street"

1947 "Out Of The Past"

1949 "D.O.A."

1950 "Narrow Margin"

1955 "The Desperate Hours"

1960 "Psycho"

1962 "The Manchurian Candidate"

1972 "The Getaway"

I'm not even going to get into the absurd films made from classic TV shows.

"the thing "1951 and the day the earth stood still" 1951

only one became a remake and john carpenter did a good job with the music score.the desolation, and cold, and the s.f.e.

however you still can't beat the original, with the snappy actor reaction, and everybody excited and talking at once.. and that famous mucic score.by a well known composer, and winchester film's..can't beat that. wink!

and "them"jimmie arness is till kickin..

good time's good memorie's.. take care,ron

The Carpenter version of "The Thing" was a decent remake because it was faithful to the original story "Who Goes There?" that Hawk's "The Thing" was based on.

The original "Alien" and "Terminator" are perfect examples of originals being much more superior to their sequels. "Rocky" and "Rambo" are also proof positive of the rule that sequels continually erode the basic premise of the original film.

Remake "Them!"? Again, the filmmakers would have to use the same 1950's time period for the film to make sense. But now the Sgt. Peterson character (James Whitmore) would be grabbing a West Hurley TSMG from the front seat of his squad car. That's enough reason to cancel the project.

Artie,

While I would prefer a 1928a1 Savage used in the possible remake to Them, I don't think that it will matter to the ants, what type of Thompson fires the .45acp into their bodies.

As for Alien, the original was heavily based on "It,the Terror from Beyond Space". Good movie, but funny now how they thought what space travel would be, prior to the space program.
