Description of Using a Thompson in Battle

Recommended Posts

I've been reading an interesting book titled "Escape From Bataan" and the author, a US Navy Ensign fighting as an infantryman on Bataan describes his Thompson being more effective firing short aimed semi auto bursts as opposed to emptying the entire drum on full auto ... Considering just how fast a Tommy eats ammo on full auto, I wonder just how many guys shot them in semi mode?

Its interesting that the Army course of fire to qualify with the Thompson was primarily semi-auto. Edited by anticus

Thats a tough one to interpret, but if it is referred to as semi auto bursts I would think of while in full auto getting single shots off which is very doable.

I think this is a case of language evolving. Today, we think of a burst of fire as multiple shots per trigger pull. It seems to me that back in that time, a burst had no minimum figure, meaning that firing single-shots semi-automatically was considered a burst as well.
