huggytree
getting my thompson ready to shoot tonight i noticed a slight movement backwards and forwards on my 1928 thompson....its not a lot...just a 64th+ or maybe a bit more....dont think ive noticed it before is this normal? also loaded a 50 round ww2 drum....says 9 or 11 clicks....which do i choose ? thanks
ron_brock
The play does not sound bad. Possibly fitting another catch button would tighten up. I reread, 1/64 inch I would attribute to slip fit for tolerances to insure interchangeability. Which internals are you running, 21 or 28? Thats the difference in clicks. 11 clicks for 21 faster RoF, 9 for 28. Ron Edited March 8, 2018 by ron_brock
TSMGguy
Have it on all my Thompsons, including the Phila. Ord. blank gun I just bought. I'd think this slight movement is desirable so that the button will lock the receiver and lower together every time, without fail.
huggytree
i own a 21 kit, but im shooting the 1928 tonight.....that clears it up.... on the gun---its not a heavily worn gun...i assumed it was normal...i just never noticed it before...over thinking thanks for the advice....being anal
ppgcowboy
Mine has zero movement. Savage lower on a Colt upper. Colt lower has zero movement either. Both slide smooth.
Paladin601
the catch pin is a consumable part, as opposed to the frame which is not. If it bothers you swap it out.
taeelec
My Savage M1 and AO Bridgeport 1928A1 have zero play. My WH M1A1 does have some slight back and forth movement (about the same as yours Huggytree). Doesn't seem to be a problem and I don't notice it when shooting. I too was curious about the 9 or 11 clicks regarding the 50rd drum. Thanks for the info Ron! Todd in Oregon
huggytree
how does that catch pin come out? mine is a ''bit'' floppy....after 77 years im sure a replacement would be normal....dont see a pin holding it in
gijive
Huggy, Held in by a tapered spring. It just pulls out, the spring is oversize at the top, creating the tension to hold it in place. Both parts are readily available.
huggytree
thanks...i ordered 2 new parts....for $15 shipped why not see what it does

ppgcowboy
To expand on what gijive said, there is a small hole that can be used to push the pin out. Use a paper clip.
huggytree
i saw that hole thanks... got uzi---got any S1928 parts? im always looking for a S pivot plate and early S1928 internals, selector levers

reconbob
The fit of the trigger frame and receiver is tricky becauseif the tolerances are too loose the frame will be loose and if tootight the frame will not slide on. One half of one thousandth of an inch (0.0005") can be the differencebetween a frame not being able to slide on and sliding on smoothly.Having made well over 1000 receivers which customers expect theirtrigger frame to properly fit and using a gage frame my rule of thumb is that if you can "rock" the frame by holding the pistol grip and twisting itside to side and the frame "clicks" then the rails are too sloppy. On theother end if the gage frame will not slide on or only slide on 1/2 way therails are too tight. If you can "click" your frame it is unfortunate and one the thosethings that bugs you, but if the gun works.... You could try different frames until you find a better fit and use thatone for shooting and save the original to keep the gun correct whenit's hanging on the wall. huggytree
i was never really worried....just something i had never noticed after owning/shooting the gun for a while....i noticed it and wondered if something was wrong...its very little movement and im sure its just within the tolerances of making every lower fit on every upper..the part was $10 shipped...so it was worth a try to see what it did... laurencen
huggytree, you could also have one turned for tightening, the larger diameter a good fit in receiver and enlarge the small diameter to the diameter of lower
