Bill in VA Posted August 10, 2003 Report Share Posted August 10, 2003 Guys, I ran about 200 rounds of Winchester 230 gr fmj (factory ammo) through my WH M1 yesterday when the grip mount popped loose. It worked its way forward about a half inch. (The barrel is still tight but the grip mount slid forward.) Since the barrel has to be removed before the grip mount can be removed, what has happened? Can it be fixed (short of a spot weld or staking it, both out of the question) without removing the barrel? Anyone have a spare 1/2 grip mount and forearm they'd be willing to part with? I got rid of my spare grip mount but got a milled grip mout from IMA for $30, finish wasn't anything to brag about but the metal condition was good. I don't know how the grip mount could come out unless something broke, and if it was a stamped forend a milled one would be an upgrade. BB Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Kevin Posted August 10, 2003 Report Share Posted August 10, 2003 Some of the WH grip mounts are made of aluminium instead of steel. The little tab that sticks up behind the last barrel rib ( the thick one that butts up to the receiver) holds the grip mount in place. It probably broke off. You might as well get a steel one as it will be much stronger. The steel ones you can get are probably three piece but it would be an improvement. PK installed a 1/2 milled grip mount & I installed a grip mount reinforcing band on it (I bought it from Gun Parts Corp. for $15.00. Don't buy on e-bay, I've seen them go as high as $90.00). PK. Posted August 11, 2003 Report Share Posted August 11, 2003 It does indeed sound like the stud on the gripmount has broken. Replacement with a milled steel GI unit is the best fix. The barrel will have to be removed and replaced in order to do this. I assume you have a ¾” gripmount currently as well as a horizontal foregrip. Your current foregrip can be re-bedded with resin to the new ½” gripmount and need not be replaced. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
