Easiest method to remove bluing?

Recommended Posts

OK, so while not directly related to Thompsons, it still applies, and you folks are among the smartest gun people I know.

I have a WWII commemerative 1911, as well as a Korea commemerative 1928. The barrel of the 1911 has some wear points. I think that removing the bluing from the entire bbl is an option to preserve value. Reblueing is the other. In either case removal of the original bluing is in order. Opinions?

I used IOSSO case cleaner on my parked Thompson and have used it to strip blued items as well. It is reusable and non-damaging. Just submerge the part for 5 minutes or so and when you pull it out use a fine wire brush, scotch Brite or 0000-steel wool to coerce any remaining finish off. You can pick it up through Cabela's here:

FYI, I forgot to mention to rinse thoroughly with water and that I only had to coerce parkerizing off a little bit. Blued items have just needed the water rinse.
