Colt model 614 production dates

It might be very hard to find an exact prodution date of this gun without doing a freedom of information request, even then it may be difficult to tell. You could try WWW.Ar15.com and near the top look for the link to M16 series guide editions. That is an interesting gun and I would sure like to see a photo of it. I believe I own a very early pre-production 614 that is a factory Colt gun but is Ar 15 marked with no model number with a serial number in the 15000 range, it is not a conversion. I estimate it to be made in 64-65, it is very unique.

I just looked at my Fredoom of Information Act request on my gun and one of the few things it did reveal was the listed date of Mfg., it was Apr. 9, 1965. Your gun was certainly made a while after that date. You may want to do a request to find the specific date, there is usually no charge for the request although you must offer to pay for if necessary. Here is a picture of my early pre-production 614. here is also a photo of Kennedy admiring a very early model AR15 which would be tested in Vietnam in 1962, he would never live long enough to see this gun become the backbone of the US infantry.

Thanks for the pics, here is mine, 208,000 serial number. Thank you for sharing the pic of Pres Kennedy. Early features as far as I can tell...

Hi again,

According to the ar15.com link, your 15,000 is 1965, and my 208,000 is also likely1965. They do have a statement that some in my guns range were late 1960's. Does yours have the same flash hider as mine? If you have an earlier style than mine, I would say mine is late 60's, if the same, likely 1965.

Yes, same flash hider. Mar. 65, is the date it was actually listed as mfg. by Colt. The very low serial number has been a puzzle to me. It could have been an early transition model. The serial number falls shortly after the 1st Armalite 601 run. Your gun looks to be in beautiful condition, thanks for the picks.

I'm looking for the link to the Model 614 dates of production/information.

I didn't see it here although it's always possible I missed it: https://www.ar15.com/forums/ar-15/-/123-241681/?

Anyone know the location on the above mentioned website or other sources of information on the Model 614?

If made before 1967 my assumption is it would be a C&R gun?
