Thompson Buttstock

Recommended Posts

Butt stock numbers - Colt 21 & military & commercial stocks even for rifles were numbered for a reason. Colts never had matching number stocks to the guns serial number. Today the practice has fallen by the way side because of precision stock making. Older guns required a lot of hand fitting especially stocks and butt plates. The sole purpose to number a stock and butt plate was to match them back up for final assembly. The parts were fitted by sanding & filing. Each stock was similar but slightly different. So after bluing the buttplate and coating the stock these parts could be put back together as a matching assembly. A nice clean fit , no butt plate over hang or butt stock being larger than the butt plate. That’s the only reason for numbers. 6125 butt plate gets screwed on to 6125 butt stock.

Military and Commercial companies used this system.

Does the butt stock at the top of the picture only have 3 digits? Or is the fourth digit covered by all the dirt and grime? Can you post a close-up of only that butt stock?

Thanks!

Are those Colts, I've been trying to find an original colt Thompson butt stock

Doug Richardson might still have some left, but as mentioned, they're not cheap.
