MP-40 in Jail

Recommended Posts

My FFL should receive my MP-40 tomorrow and it will be in jail for a long time while I wait on my Form 4. They have told me I can inspect/shoot it while it is in jail.

My question is should I "lock" it while it is in jail? What I mean is "use a gun lock running through the receiver/mag well" to keep it from being fired while it is in jail?

I also thought about removing the firing pin.

Interested in what others have done, TIA

Cheers,

Tommy

You are allowed to take home everything that are considered parts. I had lengthy debates with my dealer who did my transaction.

The only thing you need to leave is the registered part.

You are lucky they will allow you to fire it while in jail my FFL says no can do.

You need another FFL.

I agree but you have to put everything on hold to change the ffl. Just take the parts. I had to educate the local, hundreds of miles from me,atf agent what gun parts were parts. My ffl hadn't a clue either. This board was very helpful in helping me do that. Best 5hing to do in the future is save time and get your C&R license, and have your parts sent before the registered part is held. But then that does not stop it from being played with by the other party either.

Also, unless it does not matter if it is in a safe or not, see if your ffl has one, otherwise you will have that sitting on the back of your mind that your investment is sitting in a gun case pilled up in an open room in the back of a gun shop.

I went to visit my gun at the ffl yesterday and its stored in a very large walk in type safe behind a set of doors with facial recognition locks on it. Im very comfortable where my gun is sitting during the wait. Edited by Petroleum 1

I spent some time with my MP-40 today, my first hands on with it. A quick inspection and function check and then about 200 rounds downrange. Overall I was very pleased with it. I tried 5 different magazines and 3 types of ammo. It liked the 124 gr Winchester "NATO" and the MEN 124 gr. It did not like the 115 gr PMC. I was surprised to be able to "feel" the difference in the 115 and 124 gr loads. It seemed to fire slower than the videos I've watched. It garnered a lot of attention.

I need to dig up some information on cleaning and lubricating. I will be going back tomorrow to complete the paperwork and I hope to shoot it again.

After spending some time with the Range personnel and the FFL I feel good about the gun being with them. They showed me some pics of a guy shooting a MG42 there last week.

Cheers,

Tommy

Get Frank's excellent book Blitkrieg on the MP40 if you don't already have it.

The MP40 has a relatively slow rate of fire, but of course that results in excellent controllability.

See the video I just posted in another thread on this MP38-40 Board for an example of a WWII bring-back gun in operation.

I've been running Remington 115 gr bulk pack in mine without a hiccup.

Do you have a tube gun?
Yes and two originals.

Do you have parts kits for your guns?? I’m thinking of investing in one for my Wilson and some day soon I will get a battlefield gun too. Tia Vinny

I do not have any MP-40 parts kits, I have been looking and I want to get one. I bid on one recently on GB but it did not meet the reserve. I may just get a few spare parts, firing pin, extractor, ejector and a barrel. Might consider a bolt.

If anybody reading this has a parts kit please contact me with pictures and price.

Tommy

  • 6 months later...

Yesterday my MP-40 followed me home. Seven months to the day the Form 4 was e-filed I got the stamp. It was so nice to have it available to look at and tinker with. The range allowed me to shoot it whenever I wanted but there was always something I forgot to do or look at and I had to wait until the next visit to figure it out.

My Sten is still in jail, if the seven months holds it will be free in 6 weeks.

Cheers,

Tommy

There is a company in fla called bowman arms that just brought in a bunch of kits from Europe. I bought one and it was in very good condition. Idk if they have any more you can check with them. Its too bad the ATF requires the barrel to be cut up now i was hoping to get a good spare barrel but thats not the case i guess.
