I've heard that the CMMG uppers are good, but I don't have any personal experience with them.  I bought a Ciener conversion kit 30 years ago, and never have sprung for a dedicated upper.  I'd be interested to know what you end up buying, and how you like it.  Maybe there's a dedicated .22 upper in the future with my name on it...

I either bought a CMMG upper or I bought a CMMG bolt assembly with a 4 and something length barrel and put it in an upper with a handguard that goes over most of the Sparrow suppressor that's attached to it mounted to an SBR carbine lower with a Hellfire binary trigger and a magazine adaptor to use S&W AR15-22 magazines allowing the rifle's bolt hold open to function . Also bought the charging handle with the extended arm to clear the scope IIRC .

As said a CMMG dedicated upper is your best bet. You can buy one or build it yourself. However it can be very hit and miss getting an M16 to run well with .22lr. You have to get a trip and antibounce weight kit. CMMG kit works well. I use Black Dog 26 round stick mags and 50 round drums. I built a 4.2 inch upper and it runs very well. I run a Geissele SSF trigger with the springs that come with it in a Colt 9 million series M16. I have been lucky that I didn’t have to tinker with it to get it running. I do use a pressure plug also.

Hands down the CMMG!!

i have one for my M16 works great, right out of the box... A dedicated upper is suggested, shooting a lot of .22 through a 5.56mm upper will eventually plug the gas tube with lead.

Suppressed full auto .22 is FUN.

A GREAT mag loader is the McFadden Lightn' Loader. Loads 30 round mags in seconds. Adapters are available for many other .22 mags, loader is only $23.50 adapters are only $6.50. Best money you will ever spend for a loader.

Frank, is there an adapter that works with the Blackdog Thompson magazine used with the Merle kit?

Not sure check their website, or email them. If they don't make one ask them if they will. I got them to make an adapter for the .22 caliber Glock conversion.

Hi,

There is a site called "Right to Bear" here in Florida.  Great guys.  In the past have shipped really fast.  They have the CMMG parts as well as a generic that works great also (and saves a bunch).  They also have all kinds of uppers w/o forward assist or gas port stuff that you don't really need for the 22 conversion.

Here is my dedicated 4.5" 22 upper, Sparrow, and low red dot on an old SP1 RR conversion running a JAC conversion and a CMMG collar.  All normal 22 HV ammo is subsonic with the 4.5" barrel.  No fancy ammo needed to be quiet.   Works great.  Runs fast.  Wish it ran at 750 but it is closer to 950.  Watch your sear timing.  I set mine really retarded and use the ball detent mod to remove the bolt bounce.  I can get down on the red dot just fine.  YMMV :)

ps.  In the olden days, Rick Kuehl had really great dedicated uppers.  His last builds were the best but hard to come by.

+1 on the CMMG upper

You will also need their FA trip & anti-bounce bolt kit
