StrangeRanger
Not mine. Don't know if I can believe the price is realistic but if it's as rare and collectible as the buyer claims... https://www.gunbroker.com/item/872317706
TSMGguy
Watched a nice but rather plain Winchester Model 12 war finish trench gun go on G. B. for over 12,000 recently. Edited June 27, 2020 by TSMGguy
StrangeRanger
But it was a Winchester 12 not a High Standard and it was a genuine war relic not a prototype that probably never saw a rice paddy or a tunnel up close and personal. I'll be the first to admit that I don't understand military shotgun prices but this one seems out of line to me. Obviously, a knowledgeable collector may disagree. bmarvin
I actually reached out to John Stimson who is the High Standard firearm expert.I sent him the link to the Gunbroker auction as well as teh one that pre98.com hasHere is his response. Hello Brian,I have very little research about High Standard riot guns. The onlyresearch I have seen on them in print is Thomas Swearengen's book andBruce Canfield's book .I do know enough to say that I can take issue with some comments in bothbooks. More in Swearengen's book because he says more. But I have nottried to commit to paper those differences.Unfortunately, the factory records a are not easy to use in the case oftheir shotguns and since a lot of the early shotguns are not serializedthe data is not available in a serial number log.I have found orders for police shotguns that were shipped with ServiceArmament hand guards installed. I have found some that were shipped onconsignment to a few government facilities and I have found they werereturned and sold from the High Standard collection in 1980.The two references you provided are ones I have seen before. One of theaccompanying stories talks about 1970's and a model that wasdiscontinued in late 1968.I am skeptical about the two you referenced but I have not donesufficient research to see if I can find say these are valid or bogus. Tom D
That entire gun is questionable. First off, the markings are bogus. They weren't using the ordnance bomb mark during the Vietnam War. Like Mr. Stimson said, there were some guns outfitted with bayonet adaptors and heat shields that were sold to law enforcement. And I think they were blued, not parkerized. A fellow military shotgun collector I know said the only info he has ever seen on military High Standard shotguns were a few obtained during the Vietnam War for dog handlers. And these were all riot guns.
