Believe it or not in many legal areas the advice for a home intrusion is for the occupants to move from room to room away from the perps. allowing them unobstructed access to your belongings.

My thoughts on the issue are to sit tight.
You know your home.
Let the perp. come to you.
Sit on the other side of the bed, or at the top of the stairs with your shotgun or for those that own one the Anti-Bandit Gun!

Always remembering that gun control is being able to hit your target!

I love liberal jokes! The scary part is that some people actually are of that mindset. They have the duct tape mentality, a passive, feel good approach to self defense. By the way, if you don't have a yapping dog or a wired home alarm, I've found those cheap motion detectors are a good first line of defense. At least, you can be ready with your favorite piece and a flashlight.
