I thought the auction had ended early with only one bidder so it went for the 24k buy it now price. I see now that it ended at the starting price of 19k It is a first week production, matching M1 with early, correct configuration and a story. Especially at gun shows when the seller says: "I got it from a guy, who "said" that it was carried by Al Capone, or Billy the Kid, or ......When you ask for "probvenance" they just look at you and say: "What's provenance?" The reality, however, is that the early WWII guns are catching up with the gap between them and Colts. (They will never close that gap IMHO, but they are gaining fast. I sold an absolute creampuff M1 (not M1A1) and delivered it at the Creek last October. Price: $19,000+ and some change. Was a 4-digit number and came with an original padded canvas jump case with unit markings etc. 9 years ago I would have been asking $3500. Barring legislation and a nuclear attack, I firmly believe that TSMGs (even the awful "replica" WH's) are just going to keep on going, and going, and going... We'ave all discussed earlier how Thompsons are the classic example of "supply and demand" at work in a free market. I would bet you (not very much 'cause I'm a Scottish Presbyterian...) that even if the so-called real estate housing market bubble "bursts" that, unlike houses, there are only so many fine quality, transferable Class 3 out there, and there are enough guys in the highest brackets that can always afford them. My M1 has an earlier serial number than the one that just sold, but no nasty nicks in the stock. For the record my M1's karma is kind and gentle. It shoots moonbeams and flower petals. Sorry.
