Filed my ATF Form 1 (SBR) - Fee Cleared my Bank

Recommended Posts

Hello all,

I mailed my ATF Form 1 (SBR) yesterday and now I start the waiting game. My Class 3 Dealer told me that certain "non-essential" ATF employees have been laid-off due to this "partial government shutdown". Guess the wait for my Tax Stamp will take even longer than it did last time which, if memory serves, was 185 days. It'll be worth the wait, I'm sure.

Anyway, Deerslayer and I have been conversing about the conversion process when the time comes. He gave me some options and I believe I will go with cutting my existing barrel to 10.50" and have Dan install my existing front ring sight to it. He tells me that he can "sleeve" the ring sight and install it on my cut-off barrel after he "cleans-up" the muzzle on his lathe.

This will save me a couple hundred bucks over buying a new SBR barrel.

Absolute authenticity is not super important to me as long as it looks and functions good.

I'd like to hear from any of you who have gone this route - pros and cons.

Thanks in advance...

I initially went the cutting down my original barrel as well ... At first it was okay, but the longer I looked at it the less I liked it ... I went ahead and purchased a 10.5 inch barrel and had it installed by deerslayer. Changing the barrel also allows the feed ramp to be polished more effectively, reducing feed issues. I'd at least consider the replacement barrel if I were you ... Cutting down your barrel is like kissing your sister ... It just doesn't look right.

If I go with the replacement barrel, do I have to change out the grip mount and forend too?

You don't need to change out the grip mount ... You will need a new forend to fit the contour of a GI barrel. Again, Deerslayer made my forend, which fits my factory gripmount (3/4) and my GI barrel. To answer your other question about changing barrels, you would need a Thompson barrel clamp ... I have changed one barrel and since have left it to the professionals

I guess someone is working at ATF during the shutdown...

Apparently they deemed the check cashers "essential employees". I wouldn't expect any different from Uncle Sam. :D

Mine went to FBI background check in October. Which, I think, are still happening even during the shutdown. Its the same background checks that happen when you buy a gun, its just that the FBI lumps NFA transfers at the back of the line.

My Form 1 Tax Stamp Fee (debit) cleared my bank yesterday. :)

The "official" wait-clock starts now.

Lol, of course they will cash checks. Working on papers is likely a different story :-)
