Strange Thompson M1921A1 manual for the US Army

Recommended Posts

Hello everybody! I found the Technical Manual ( War Department ) about the Thompson M1928A1 from 1942.

Its strangeness is that the title page depicts .... TSMG is a Chinese copy. The manual was printed for the US Army.

The first question, the guys who published this paper did not know what the Thompson M1928A1 looks like .. the second question, where did they get the Chinese copy of TSMG in 1942 ...

It's fun. Anyone have any thoughts on this?

Thanks!

That looks like a reprint of the manual that someone added a photograph to.

The original manuals had a line-drawing of a U.S. 1928 Thompson on the cover

And original manuals did not have "COPYRIGHTED MATERIAL" printed on them.

Those manuals are public domain, I suspect whoever reprinted the manual thought the adding COPYRIGHT would cover the photograph. And possibly discourage someone else from copying it.

BUT who knows? Just my .02 cents

Victor,

I have two original copies of TM 9-215 in my collection and neither have a picture of a Thompson on the front cover, I believe the ones with pictures of Thompson on them are not originals but post war commercial reprints.

One is marked on the last page "US Government Printing Office 1942", the other is marked on the last page, "Publication department - Raritan Arsenal". Although the contents are the same, they have a different print layout and different quality of paper, which results in the Raritan version having 28 pages and the US Govt. Printing office version 25 pages. The US Govt. Printing office version also came with an amendment page “Changes No.1”, dated 1943.

Stay safe

Richard
