The New Tompson Drums Are Out.*pics*

Recommended Posts

Just received this today.

The quality looks good. No LE markings.

Note the "9" and "11" are not stamped deep enough.

Looks as if the edges are a bit less radiused than the West Hurley drums but the mag catch portion of the stamped plate looks like it is not quite as sharp as the originals. Is that "BLUE" color actual? Looks like cold blue to me, with the attached parts being darker. Maybe just the way the photos were taken..... http://www.machinegunbooks.com/forums/invboard1_1_2/upload/html/emoticons/dry.gif

Is this one of the new Kahr drums that our "group buy" will be procuring (hopefully) soon?? Guess if that blue color is real then I'll be looking to have three drums Black Oxided somewhere!

But then again, they'll just be shooters anyway, right?? http://www.machinegunbooks.com/forums/invboard1_1_2/upload/html/emoticons/wink.gif

Most Importantly, did you shoot it yet> HOW DOES IT FUNCTION??

Keep us all posted!!

You are correct. The edges are formed sharper then WH drums.

The mag catch stamping plate quality is less then older drums.

But the mag catch locks up fine when installed in 1928.

The blueing is fine. The color is due to my scanner.

I just wanted to get some fast pics up for everyone.

Yes this is one of the new Kahr drums.

I have not had time to try out the drum yet.

Overall the Kahr quality does not compare to the WWII original military drums.

I am just going by memory as I sold my old drums a few years ago.

http://www.machinegunbooks.com/forums/invboard1_1_2/upload/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif Hey timkel; put 50 rounds in it, and while the lid is off , manual function it, turning a few clicks and seeing if all rounds move thru the maze and out the exit freely............Mine did, except right by the exit, the outer wall was slightly dented, and needed correction. Other than that my new made/post-sunset-ban drum ran them right out when fired....... http://www.machinegunbooks.com/forums/invboard1_1_2/upload/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Mine also has the lightly inscribed '9' & '11' numbers too, & no LE....I ordered two, and only got one for now, with their promise to send the second one, once all orders got one first.. http://www.machinegunbooks.com/forums/invboard1_1_2/upload/html/emoticons/blink.gif

What a useless thing the ban was, so glad it is over...... http://www.machinegunbooks.com/forums/invboard1_1_2/upload/html/emoticons/laugh.gif ..jw

Just registered a few minutes ago. I just got my drum from Kahr and it doesn't work! Something is wrong with the springs. It takes 2-3 clicks before the cartridges even advance to the feed lips, and 9 or 11 clicks only spits out about 6 cartridges. Any advice on what to do? Should I send it back or send it to PK?

These new drums seem to click 3 times for each 1/4 turn, so 30 clicks = 10 real ones. (one real click = 1/4 revolution)

I have been comparing notes with Merle as we examine the first production examples; expect full report in a posting within two weeks.

Like PK said ignore the click count by sound. Wind it up visually(1 click= 1/4 turn)

I just did a dry run with cartridges.

The rotor needed to be deburred on the fingers.

Cartridge rims were hanging up on the edges of several fingers.

I had to work on each finger until smooth.

There were many sharp edges that needed to be smoothed down.

Now this drum seems ready for the range.

GENUINE WW2 ROUND MAG FOR SALE!

Hey All of you gun-crazies!

I am a Russian militaria dealer and live in the USA. My sources in Russia just obtained several WW2 era round (model 1928) Tompson magazines made by Inter-Ordnance Corp in Bridgeport, Conn-- never used mint condition from Russian military storage, apparently sent to Russia during WW2 through the Lend Lease program. I do not deal in weapon parts or US militaria and have a no idea of the demand or true market value for these puppies. Below is a link to an image:

I will also post one on eBay, you can see it here, unless eBay Police pulls the plug.

If anyone interested to purchase one, please e-mail me with a reasonable offer. Keep in mind, that we could not test them and they will be sold as is with no guarantee of being able to do what they suppose to do, but I will gladly answer any non-technical questions, provide photos, etc.

timkel,

So it sounds like typical Kahr - raise the price and lower the quality.

EDITED TO ADD: By quality, I mean having to rework each finger to get the drum to work, not the clicking between major notches. By quality, I mean the poor stamping of the 9 and 11. By quality, I mean the poor finish. In sum I mean by the accounts to-date, Kahr has raised the price and lowered the quality of the product. Period. I would welcome reports of a superior product. At least a product comparable to a Bridgeport drum.

I plan to acquire a Merle modified L drum to use in my M1. I do not want to, nor should I have to pay Merle an additional fee just to get a properly functional drum BEFORE it is modified for M1 use. I have seen nothing that tells me that I will be able to avoid the additional expense to pay Merle to do what Kahr should be doing in the first place.

I openly challenge Kahr to respond. I challenge them to justify the price increase beyond "Because they can and the buyer will pay". With increased sales, the price should have been lowered, not raised. I further challenge them to produce a product at least equal to what was made by low-tech, war-time production.

Even the older Kahr drums would click multiple times when in fact it should only click once. It got to where I would do 2 clickers to equal a single click per regular drum.

I would give it an extra click or two at the end.

The end result has been a drum that has functioned great and reliable enough to use it in a few competitions.

My two circa 1994 WH L drums give two "minor" clicking sounds for every "major" clicking sound, with a major clicking sound every 1/4 turn. I saw a "Valentine" drum that did the same thing.

Sigh, I know this has been discussed ad nauseum regarding reimportation of US made parts for Tommys, but what about these L drums Dimitry is offering?

Can he legally re-import these and then resell them in the US now that "The Ban" has expired?

The multi click thing had to do with the problem that the four armed rotation *stop* did not precisely match the four ledges pressed in the back of the main drum housing, so you would get one big click, then a couple smaller clicks as teh arms on the stop fell into place. At least that is what i recall from looking at this problem 10 years ago. Ever since then, i don't count clicks, I count turns. 2.5 turns is a full wind.

When the back plate is attached to the outside of the body, it is resistance welded, then two rivets are placed in the bottom edge. These rivets happen to be in the same path as the ratchet plate. The pre war drums were finely crafted and the heads of these rivets inside the body were nicely domed and the ratchet would slide over and down without noise.

The post war drums all seem to have been made without consideration of this issue; the heads of the rivets inside the drum being left square and standing tall. This accounts for the extra clicks; one for the ratchet stop pressed into the body and one for each of the two rivets.

It is not wise to simply grind off the rivet heads inside the case for obvious reasons. The heads can be reset with proper punch & anvil and then finished with a bit of grinding if necessary to correct the problem.

Given: instruction to wind 9-11 clicks

Given: 1”click” = ¼ revolution

10 “clicks”= 10/4 revolution = 2 ½ revolutions for a fully wound L drum of any variety.

I hope we see high capacity magazine prices begin to come down as the initial demand is satisfied and the ban is not renewed for awhile. The same thing has happened with parts kits (AK-74 and others) when people realized that these can now be built into really nice guns with full evil features. The prices charged by some of the better builders spiked, as well!

John Jr.,

I'm not sure what you're laughing at. The drums might be legitimate imports under the current rules, if we could figure out what they are. See all of the above.

I was commenting on the Interordnance and Gun crazy comments mostly. I am not buying anymore drums so I could care less what they import. http://www.machinegunbooks.com/forums/invboard1_1_2/upload/html/emoticons/wink.gif
