Here's one of the most rare American rifles, with only some 2,500 being produced. The first two digits of the serial number are the production year, 1940. The last were produced in 1942. This particular rifle was an early civilian purchase, and was not acquired by the US government directly from Remington. Unfortunately, it's had the receiver drilled and tapped for scope bases, and the original steel butt plate has ben replaced by a rubber recoil pad. All but 100 of these rifles were produced in .30-06.

I don't know that I've ever seen a 720 in person. At least if I have, I didn't know it. I have two of what replaced the Model 720. One is a 721 in '30-06, and the other a 722 in .257 Roberts that both belonged to my grandfather, who purchased them in the late 1940's. They are beautiful rifles featuring Fajen stocks.

Beautiful, unmodified example here, in original, almost new condition. The sling is not original. I make the serial number to be 42110, with the first two digits being the year of manufacture.

My 720 is later yet. Interestingly, the caliber marking differs. Mine reads .30 GOVT -06.

These are among the most rare of American serial produced rifles. IMHO the Remington 720 is the most beautiful rifle ever made by any major US arms maker. The photos do not do this one justice:
