Robert Henley
I bought this MP-40 sling, and have received it. Could the experts advise on its originality: https://www.gunbroker.com/item/820036194 I don't see any markings on it. It does have a slight musky smell, and I will air it out and believe it will be fine in a couple of days or so. Let me know if any questions. Thanks, Robert
Haenelistklasse
Hi Robert, does it have cross stitching on it? Some people use that as a sign of authenticity. Even if it does not, my gut is telling me it is fine. It does have quite a bit of age and the quality is ausgezeichnet (excellent in German). Petroleum 1
It is longer than the normal MP40 sling but slightly shorter than a K98 sling. No cross stitching maybe a cut down K98k sling possibly post war Czech mfg. You got a good deal on it though.
huggytree
You should see the pattern on the leather. Mine is heavily used and the pattern doesnt show everywhere. If you cannot see this pattern somewhere? Then I vote its not a mp40 sling Edited July 13, 2019 by huggytree
TSMGguy
Your sling may be post war Austrian (there were no differences but a stamp) but for 35 bucks you did fine! It does not appear to be a cut down 98K sling. The milled steel button looks post war. Early steel German buttons were milled and had two flat inner surfaces, with generally one flat outer surface with the other convex, or two convex. They were well made. This one has two convex surfaces against the leather. You find the stamped end pieces on the friction bar after about 1942. Before that, the bar was a single milled piece. Not all MP-40 slings were marked or cross-hatched. Here are pics of one of mine. You can see the makers mark and dimly see the MP 38 u. 40 stamp, which doesn't survive on well used examples. The sling is original to my all matching bnz 41 MP-40. The sling was made in Austria to German specs. It has no cross hatching. The sling was also made in Austria. It has no cross hatching. I remembered this fact from a post a long time ago. I did look for markings with a magnifying glass, but I'll have to look further with better lighting to see if I can see any markings. It certainly has the look and feel of an original. All very helpful. Thanks, Robert

Robert Henley
Some pictures. I didn't see any markings except near the button end where the stitchings are they are some very faint markings that are too small to read. Robert

Petroleum 1
Looking thru some books this sling looks like a post war Italian copy of a German WW2 sling. Edited July 22, 2019 by Petroleum
Robert Henley
Looking thru some books this sling looks like a post war Italian copy of a German WW2 sling. Thanks Vin. I think it's definitely intended for a MP-40 but the extra length is interesting (providing for a little lower carry when slung). When I get a chance I'll install on my BNZ 41 and see how it looks. Robert Henley
Robert, here's what you need for tha bnz MP40 of yours: https://collectorsmilitaria.com/mp38_mp40_ammo_pouch_complete_with_3_magazines_and_speed_loader_111209.htm Very nice. I do have six nice 98E magazines (and some other different code magazines). I've got the repro pouch. Would like to have a nice original like in the link but very expensive from what I've seen. I do keep my eyes open. Here's a leather one on GB: https://www.gunbroker.com/item/822223425
TSMGguy
Yeah, a nice set or original pouches can set you back $1,500 to $2,500. FWIW, here's the nicest set of repro pouches I've ever seen. They're made in the Czech Republic and are amazing. Original magazines fit perfectly. They'll be on your door step three days after ordering! https://www.ebay.com/itm/WW2-German-Army-High-Quality-Handmade-MP40-MP-40-Ammo-Pouch-TOP-Handmade-Repro/263415808827?_trkparms=aid%3D111001%26algo%3DREC.SEED%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D20160908105057%26meid%3D43d977b9967744bdb76fd9e20688770e%26pid%3D100675%26rk%3D1%26rkt%3D15%26mehot%3Dlo%26sd%3D263415808827%26itm%3D263415808827%26pg%3D2481888&_trksid=p2481888.c100675.m4236&_trkparms=pageci%3Adae2fb07-b855-11e9-8c70-74dbd180c7b1%7Cparentrq%3A6750e13316c0a4b7b73a295dffdcd77f%7Ciid%3A1
