Lead bullets in the Thompson

Recommended Posts

I am just checking to see if any of you guys run lead bullets in a submachine gun. It sure would reduce the cost, but I am concerned about leading and not enough power to work the action reliably.
Thanks in advance,
Rabbit

Lead and compensators do not mix. Period. Lead clogs the comp, screws up the accuracy and is damned near impossible to remove. In a non-comped gun leading the barrel will be a continual maintenance issue. Stick with plated bullets from Berry's, Xtreme or the like. They actually lead the barrel less than traditional FMJs because they do not have an exposed base.

Run lead all the time from round nose to H&G 68 SWC. I do not have a comp'ed gun.

Properly sized and lubed bullets will not lead. The new coated lead slugs shoot very well for me and they run through a bullet feeder. See Precision bullet.

I have casted lead for years and still have a Star sizer for the traditional lube groove. Not tried to coat at home yet.

I shoot a lot of my own cast lead thru a WH 28 w/o compensator. Wheel weights with some tin added. It must be hard enough because properly coated I've had no leading problems.
