Real or Reproduction Pouch?

Recommended Posts

What are the markings, if any? Have you checked this website for views of originals: https://www.mp40.nl/index.php?page=original-pouches ?

I have a pair of repro pouches that have been 'distressed' to look authentic. Maker marked "bml" who made holsters, but not pouches. No eagle mark.

Have you been able to compare them to any originals at all? Any rust on the D rings? I hope you did well on them.

They have the definite look of artificial distressing. It looks like they tried so hard to make them look authentic that it is a dead giveaway they are not.The mags look 100% but the mag loader looks almost too minty for my tastes. I am lucky enough to own a mismatched pair of original pouches and it took me 20 years to find a second one I was happy with. I sent pics to Alex Cruiming (mp40.nl) and he was so impressed he offered to buy it right away which I declined of course. I discovered the pouch on gunstroker a few months back. Nobody wanted it so I made him an offer and I wound up snatching it up. Originals are just super duper rare. No one wants to sell theirs it seems.

these days since this stuff has been faked for 40-50 years it's impossible to tell, even for "experts". I'd say a bunch of the pouches on mp40nl are also repro's, but once given street cred on the net, a lot of people assume they are legit and now people believe it. There are repro items shown in the latest MG accessory book as well, that people now assume are original items because they've been legitimized in books and on websites. If you pay more than repro pricing on some of this stuff eventually you'll convince yourself it's real, that's just human nature. Once an item tops $100 assume there will be a comm block country with skilled crafts people reproducing it, often better than original. Now I'm seeing aged repro MP44 magazines bringing big money. It never stops, and I assume most every piece of webgear is a repro. I've seen a number of "bringback" items, that it turns out grandpa has receipt from the 60's or 70's when he bought it, even though the family assumed everything in the footlocker was from WWII.

I have no idea if the pouches pictured are original....by that I mean made during the 40's in Germany or one of the countries they had taken over. It could be made in Italy and be "original"?

Hi, Robert,

These are the well made Czech repros that have been made for many years. They're usually made of well used Soviet era canvas bearing little resemblance to that used in WWII. The stitching is slightly off, and the belt loops are too wide. If there are markings they're never those used originally. The good news is that original mags and loaders usually fit very well.

Some coming out of the Czech republic today are superior in quality to the originals and I bought a set. They're really nice. $99, no shipping charge, and they were on my doorstep via FedEx in three days. The same seller has had variations in the past with different canvas, markings, pebble grained leather, and the MP38u.40 markings on the back.
