JTinIN
When one replaces a rear sight and I assume the rivets, does this nearly require refinishing the receiver (which is a negative factor? Or are they ways to do a touch up of the finish, use prefinish rivets etc.). The M1 has the rear sight with wings, over the rear of the logo, one might assume that was first done with just the "L" sight. Thus one option, if the damaged sights are replaced, is replacing the winged sight with a "L" sight, in particular since does not have a cross bolt stock. Any pros or cons? TSMGguy
Which sight to use is really just a matter of taste. M1 TSMGs were delivered with both the "L" rear sight, and later, the type with protective ears. The rivet pattern is the same for both, but the metal is thicker on the "L" sight. The "L" sight also has a slightly larger "footprint" on the receiver, and so may cover up any finish problems under the sight. Most guns were refinished without bothering to remove the rear sight if it was in good shape, so who knows what you'll find under your rear sight base, finish wise. When faced with just this choice recently, I went with the Lyman "L" type as the gun is marked as an M1 and it has a stock with no cross-bolt, all milled parts, a "bright" M1 bolt, and flat, plain pivot and safety.http://thompson.gotdns.com/tsmgguy/mvc-004s.jpg
