Ya'll need to run a gun shop for a while and listen to some of the brilliant crap people believe. Let's see.......you can make anything full auto by filing the sear pin down(WTF?)..........I got a german sniper rifle, it's a 7.65 mauser..........the Japs must have never fielded any straightleg infantry because every redneck in the world that has an Arisaka swears it's a Jap sniper rifle, even if it's a Carcano or a Lebel........

you'll wear the riflings (sic) out of a .22 barrel if you clean it with a brush.........you can shoot .44 magnums out of a .410 and it's ok, you can shoot .223 in a 7.62x39mm because the drill sgt. told them the commies could use our ammo but we can't use thiers (also see 7.62x54r interchanging with 7.62 nato). These are just a few that I can remember. If every dumbsh*t that comes in spouting off about converting something to full auto was a fed there would be more of them than us. Most of the same people think a MAK90 is a machine gun. The fact is very few people know anything about the mechanics of firearms or the law and that includes law enforcement. The local ATF agent tried to tell a friend of mine that he could register an M14 that was abandoned at his shop. The agent adamently stated he'd help him register it so he could keep this U.S. GI M14. 3 days later he figured out it was illegal and came by to get it. Take care of your own business in a lawful manner and don't worry too much about the other guy unless it has ramifications to you personally. Most of the gunshop commando talk is based on a couple of movies and listening to others without the ability to comprehend what people who are into the hobby enough to be on a website like this are saying. Oh, I forgot and saved the best ones for last. These happen when they look at my 2 dummy 1919s on display........That's a 50mm machine gun just like I shot in the army...........looking at the .30 muzzle,"That's a pretty nice .50 cal. you got there". To compile your own list of great gun shop commando quotes rent a table at your next gun show and let the games begin. One last quote for the road. A man was impressing his 20 yr old son with his firearms knowledge by pointing out that the East German 7.62X39 ball that I was selling had," Binell primers and corrosive powders in it." All most forgot the guys building illegal Stien (wtf?) guns. I always wanted to ask how much beer they hold.

Ok, here's my latest. A guy comes n and tells me he found an AK47 hidden in the wall of a house and it's in great shape. I think cool we may be $200 and some torch cuts away from a nice type 56-1 bring back kit. When he brings the AK in, it's the nicest most beautiful M43 Spanish 8mm Mauser short rifle you ever saw.Damn near 100%, but how he thought it was an AK I'll never know.

I saw a guy at a gun show walking around with a NICE K-98k. So, I told a friend at the show that collects WW II German stuff about it. He looked it over and walked away. I wondered what was wrong with it. He said that the would - be seller had "ground off the Nazi marks yesterday so it'd be legal to sell." http://www.machinegunbooks.com/forums/invboard1_1_2/upload/html/emoticons/blink.gif My friend offered $50 for the stock and told the seller everything else was almost worthless. Good thing he didn't file down the sear pin it would have been full auto:) I once saw a guy trying to sell an M1 Garand that he had "sportinized". He had milled off the rear sight and placed a buckhorn sight on the barrel to match the beaded ramp front sight he had grafted on. He had cut the butt and put on a ventailated recoil pad and removed the front and rear handguards. For fun I told a retired Marine buddy who loved Garands and was looking to buy one that I had seen one walking around for $175. He caught the guy and when he examined the rifle he made R. Lee Ermey sound like a Sunday School Teacher.

i'd just like to throw my 0.02 in.

several times you mention, " This kid claims he recently purchased a Bren parts kit, from overseas, via the internet. ".

the term "parts kit" catchs my eye.

parts kits are all over the place for just about any old mil weapon, i was looking at getting a garand kit. in fact i put my 1919 together from a kit.

now i don't know if even a semi version of a bren is a no-no in NY.

and i'm not up british weapons, but is it a tube gun like the sten?

being a kid, proud of his new purchase maybe he's just bragging it up.

i mean it's a parts kit(all parts EXCEPT the receiver) and all you're really missing is the receiver to have a "fully funcationial full auto". so technicaly it was a full auto, just missing an important part or two...

i've heard of a few people doing semi converstions on stens maybe it's not that hard for a bren.

once agian i referance my '19.

the art of converting them is far from rocket science. buy a parts kit, a little bit of internal machining on a few parts, a new RSP and a semi auto trigger and sear, and BANG you have a semi auto belt fed.

and this guy works at a gun shop, you would think he knows the rules of this game?

i'll shut up now...

http://www.machinegunbooks.com/forums/invboard1_1_2/upload/html/emoticons/tongue.gif hehhehheh once had a guy try to sell me a 179 rd. drum for my 1928a1. Wow, i ask him how he knows its a 179 rd. drum and he says he was able to stuff 179 rds. of .45 acp into it. http://www.machinegunbooks.com/forums/invboard1_1_2/upload/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif Obviously, this i had to see. After 4 days of good-naturedly egging him on he comes to my house with the drum and proudly shows it to me. Turns out it was the drum mag of a USAS-12 shotgun. I was laughing so hard i forgot to ask him how he was able to stuff 179 rds. of .45 acp in it. http://www.machinegunbooks.com/forums/invboard1_1_2/upload/html/emoticons/laugh.gif

The BREN LMG was a Czech design that came from the BRNO company/arsenal. The British Enfield Arsenal modified the design for their needs, and the BREN was born. The German Army used the Czech version (production never stopped until 1945) which is VERY similar to the BREN. Some parts doubtless interchange. Class dismissed! http://www.machinegunbooks.com/forums/invboard1_1_2/upload/html/emoticons/laugh.gif

Hardrede,

Since the "Shrike" is de rigueur discussion on the Bowers and Buddy boards, mostly because so many people have submitted deposits over a year ago on a belt fed M-16 upper, it never occured to Ares to first secure clearance with ATF? He got a patent, sollicited deposits, built a working model, but figured he could deal with the red tape when the feeling was right. If you even suggest the Occam's Razor answer on the other boards as to why they have not received their Shrikes, they consider you a heretic. The same goes with questioning the Stewart ruling.

Maybe I'm mistaken, but apparently someone does have an ATF approval letter to build semi brens. It also appears that there is rewelding of the receiver parts to achieve this. To find the letter, click on the link and then scroll all the way down. There are several pages to the letter which are kind of hidden. To find them, you will see a "next page" button way up at the top of the first letter page.

Walter--

Looks like the ATF letter was dated Jan 2003. His site was last updated 4-17-04. Since he is now taking orders, it appears that this info is fairly current. I've been following his build and approval for awhile. The last obstacle he overcame was to create a dummy flash supressor to pass the AWB test.

Walter--

That is one of the problems of these kit rebuilds, you read all the material, you follow all the rules, but you constantly keep looking over your shoulder. I had that feeling with the homemade semi 1919s. There are scads of people who have done this, but I felt a bit uncomfortable pursuing mine and I would certainly feel conspicious taking it to a public range. If you have any doubts, it is best to buy one already made, by a company that has been in business for awhile, like U.S. Ordnance. I would think if it is purchased through an FFL, you have covered your bases. I don't know if they have the semi Bren, but they did make a semi Vickers that caught my attention.

I'm not a big fan of the BREN, but I gotta admit, my hat's off to the guy! http://www.machinegunbooks.com/forums/invboard1_1_2/upload/html/emoticons/smile.gif

Hardrede, I indeed noticed Lens' Comments, and decided to post two links that may have proved useful for some. Also, on the PDMall Site, there are those RPD Semi Clones, except it appears to me like a RPD had mated with an FN-FAL! http://www.machinegunbooks.com/forums/invboard1_1_2/upload/html/emoticons/laugh.gif Walter, be careful what you hear at Gun Shops/Shows/Ect. There are some who fish for information on others by telling them that they own a contraband firearm, in hopes that some will admit the same. Afterall, remember what happened to Randy Weaver? A few years ago, I was at a local Gun Show, and had a Bushmaster AR15 slung over my shoulder. A seedy appearing individual came up to me, and asked whether or not I wanted to purchase a set of M16 Conversion Parts for it! Yes, he could have been working with the BATFE, or just some damn fool who didn't know any better, but I not so politly told him "NO WAY!". Be careful, and the next time someone who openly talks about an unlawful MG, take NO part in the conversation. PERIOD!
