Reassembleing Magazince Catches

Recommended Posts

What's the trick to reassembling the mag catch to the frame? I'm assuming both ends of the spring have to be inserted into the slot on the frame. Do you just have to wrangle it in? Do you remove the spring fromt he catch and insert it first?

I checked the field manual and in true government fashion it it says for reassembly; "first see that the magazine catch is in place'. Kind of like when defusing bombs, 'cut the green wire, after removing fuse'.

First put the end of the spring that fits into the little hole in the mag catch, then with the mag catch rotated around 90 degrees up, the other end of the spring should be lined up with the space for it in the hole. Slide the mag catch and spring into the hole about half way, then rotate the mag catch down (clockwise if its facing you) until its almost in place, then push it all the way in, finally letting the projection go through the hole in the trigger guard.

Easy to do, hard to describe.

I should have added this. To get it into the upright position, where it will slide into place, you will actually unwind the spring as you turn the magazine catch. You'll start with it past the normal seated position, insert the spring, then turn counterclockwise to the vertical, then push in and then clockwise.

Is this clear.... Hawkeye is right, get the video http://www.machinegunbooks.com/forums/invboard1_1_2/upload/html/emoticons/smile.gif

The AGI video shows this procedure also,..and maybe easier to acquire...where can you find the military video,Hawkeye?...that would be a good one to pick up...is this the one that Frank sells?... http://www.machinegunbooks.com/forums/invboard1_1_2/upload/html/emoticons/wink.gif

Some of you video-buffs should make short video clips for our FAQ. Clip ideas might include: how to sling a Thompson, unjamming a Thompson, proper way to shoot a Thompson, installing a spring without losing an eye, etc. Any takers? And don't forget to use pretty models http://www.machinegunbooks.com/forums/invboard1_1_2/upload/html/emoticons/wink.gif

The Army video shows it slipping right in with the same text as the manual "see that the magazine catch is in place" I think Dan was a little more explicit. Of course they do tell you it is not to be removed.

Your right though Dan, once you've done it there is nothing to it. I was missing the fact that the end of the spring sips into the hole on the mag catch. Its not obvious there is even a hole there when the spring is on, but not seated.

One more of life's mysteries solved. Thanks guys.
