Model is a 1928 Thompson.

Owned a hand guard years ago that looked similar but I always had assumed Sarco had put it together for marketing purposes. A number of Marines photographs in the Pacific theater that have vertical addition added. Less photographs of the vertical modification in European theater.

It was a rear grip, cut square and added to the horizontal. Seen in the ETO and the PTO.

Look at the USGI directly behind Churchill.

Note the US helmet, uniform, belt, trousers (Jodhpurs), etc.

Note too the tall boots.....a motorcycle messenger. He's standing there looking like that's his gun that Churchill is test firing, no?

And there are a couple more US Helmets beyond Winston.

Did the Motorcycle Messengers modify grips like this? Wouldn't think they'd fit in their Harley WLA scabbard.

Makes one wish someone had put a few notes on the back of that pic.

In one of the other threads that soldier standing off the the side of Winston with the tall boots was thought to be Maj. Gavin, 82nd Airborne.

Edit. Likely not Gavin as he was promoted to Brigadier General December 1943 and the photo is supposed to be spring of 1944.
